Puppy hind legs very weak
I have a litter of 4 english staffies. 3 are charging forward but one of my girls is so very small. I took her to the vet at two weeks old as i noticed she was falling behind. They gave her fluids and antibiotics and sent me home. Since then i have tried bottle feeding her but she hates the teat so i monitoring her feeding with mum. Now 3.5weeks and three are walking and over 2kg in weight. My little girl is just under 800g and her back legs are so weak. She will try to walk but is very wobbling. Vet check again and they gave her another shot of antibiotic and were amazed she is still alive. I have started giving her extra feeds using a syringe and vet puppy formula as well as feeds from mum. I refuse to give up on her but not sure what to do to strengthen her back legs. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Puppy hind legs very weak
Hi & welcome.
at that age I doubt that you can do any more than you are doing now. It's a matter of 'wait & see'.
Some pups are just born with difficulties, and all you can do is supplement her (as you're doing now) and wait to see if she picks up.
Sadly, not all do, but don't give up!

She is whats commonly known as the runt of the litter. You usually get one in a large litter,a bit surprised you got one in a small litter of 4.The good thing is,she doesn't have to fight for a teat being a small litter. You can do no more than you are doing, and hope for the very best.

Re: Puppy hind legs very weak
I wasnt ready to lose her. I am now watching the other 3 puppies like a hawk. Mum is not enjoying feeding her puppies now that they have their teeth. I have tried locking her in with the pups and tried to gently hold her so they can feed. This has really stressed her and she has turned into Houdini to escape her offspring. I have been trying to wean them with puppy formula from the vet as well as ground up puppy kibble (the same that their mum is currently on). I am not having much success and since mum is really stressing I guess I need to take this weaning a bit faster than I expected. This is my girl's (and mine) first litter. I have decided tbis will be our only litter. My heart cant take it. The dad is also mine and I am more than happy with the 3 of us lol. Any help, hints and guidance regarding weaning would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Puppy hind legs very weak
I really don't know much about breeding & weaning. From what I've read I believe it's normal for Mum to want some time away from pups. I really think if u allow her to take breaks she will go back to feed pups now & again. Im sure someone with more experience will be on soon to help you. I wouldn't force her to be with the puppies

Re: Puppy hind legs very weak
Mum's milk needs to dry up gradually so she will naturally feed them less and less. Try adding replacement milk to the kibble to soften it. You could give bowls of the replacement milk to stop you worrying about Mum feeding them less

Re: Puppy hind legs very weak
I would seek advice from the vet as mum may frow to resent the pups .askbtge vet about what kind of baby formula to use as cows milk will upset the stomach.

Hi,
I was just wondering how your puppies are getting on ?
I'm guessing they were born around Easter time so a similar age to mine

Re: Puppy hind legs very weak
Hello Nifty Staffy, yes they were born on Good Friday. My three little ones are absolutely beautiful and naughty lol. They have had their 1st vaccination and a complete vet check. Two people have viewed them and their parents and are excited about their family additions. It will be a very sad day when they leave for their forever homes. How are you little ones?

I'm a lucky future parent
I'll be going to fetch her in a couple of weeks but the breeder has put loads of photos and videos on her site to help us future owners with the wait.
Will you be keeping number three then ?

Hi gillybrent,
My little ones are 10 are nearly 10 weeks. All have been sold. My little boy goes to his new family this Sunday and then the last one leaves the following weekend. It will all be bitter sweet
