Re: Black Staffies
you cant get a pure black dog it has to have a bit of white, if a dog was pure black it would be still born that what i was told i think black or blindle the dominating gene i cant remember which one
Re: Black Staffies
Our puppy is black and white but at 3 weeks looks more chocolate brown. I'm interested to see what colour he end up. His dad is black brindle but looks pure black. Mum is blue and white. I really don't mind what colour he is, just interested

Re: Black Staffies
From what I've just read via Google it would appear that you can and its all about genetics. I'm taking the assumption that Google is always right here but this link might give you a bit more info if you can manage to read it through

Re: Black Staffies
as far as i am aware, all black staffords have some brindling on them somewhere, if you look hard enough. sometimes you can only see it when the sun shines on the coat!

I'll try and simplify it as it is quite complicated to be fair.
Hair has two types of pigment, eumelanin which is a black/brown pigment and phenomelanin red/yellow pigment.
Now think of an on or off button within the genes that decide the hair colour. For ease and as it's Hair
H is eumelanin and h is phenomelanin.
Black would be HHHH (I'm using 4 as that is how many letters are in the word hair lol)
Blonde would be hhhh
Brown would be Hhhh
So it's a mix of these two types of pigment that gives the colour.
Bearing in mind this is a simplified version of what actually goes on but I hope it explains it.
Re: Black Staffies
Thank you, very interesting. My puppy now has brindle stripes thru him. His Dad looks jet black
