Hello and recommendation of a vet?
Hi All,
I'm new to the site and here to seek some help if possible. My name is Elliot and we have two family Staffs, the eldest is Zeus aged 12 and Luna aged 11.
Recently Luna had fractured her back left leg and was taken to the vets. They did a scan and looks to be a re-break from an old injury.
Without going into too much detail the vet had suggested the best outcome would be to put her to sleep . This isnt only due to her broken leg but in the past year or so she has been struggling to walk and become incontinent. The vet had made a few suggestions but unsure how successful they would be:
* Leave the break to heal but will become locked and have none or little movement.
* Amputate the leg but would struggle due to the strength left in her right leg.
* A specialist to operate but no guarantee that it will make an difference.
* Put her to rest.
We of course don't want her to struggle and the vet's recommendation was to put her to rest. My stepdad has no children and this is the closest thing he as to one. He is really struggling to come to grips with letting her go especially when her mind still seems so with it.
The least we can do is get a second opinion to confirm what we think is the inevitable but need to make sure.
Does anyone know of a good vets located in the Hampshire / Surrey area? My stepdad is preferably looking for a vet with lots of experience (age).
Thanks in advance,
Elliot

Re: Hello and recommendation of a vet?
Hi Elliott and Welcome to the forum from me and Misty. So sorry to hear about Luna but I agree its always worth getting a second opinion.
Have you tried the Supervet (from Ch4) he is based in the Guildford area although I think you might have to get your vet to refer you there ( I would check this though as Im not sure). A work colleagues neighbour has a Staffy with leg issues and she was able to see a vet at his clinic.
Is Ashford in Middesex too far for you as its just outside Hampshire/Surrey? My vet is there and they are very good- we have had a few different vets each time we have been but when we had Misty spayed we had a lovely older lady who was excellent with her and I trusted her completely. If its not too far I can speak to the surgey to get you her name?
Best wishes to you and Luna.

Re: Hello and recommendation of a vet?
Hi, thank you both for the reply. We will definitely get a second opinion. The broken leg was what prompted us to take her to the vets as she was in pain. Effectively I think her hips have gone or on the way out bless her. She's been such a hyper dog it's almost like she's run herself into the ground. We have been googling local vets and as previously mentioned the super vet has popped up several times.
Thank you for the suggestion of the vets in Middlesex, I will tell my stepdad and get back to you if that's ok for me details if needed.
Much appreciated, Elliot

I'm sorry to read the troubles your having but I agree that a second opinion is the right way to go at this stage and then make an informed decision afterwards.
Fingers crossed for you that something can be done.

Re: Hello and recommendation of a vet?
absolutely, get a second opinion!
I do see that IF the leg won't heal properly and it needs amputation, that she would struggle as she has issues with the other leg, but I would certainly give her the chance to mend first!
Is she insured?

Re: Hello and recommendation of a vet?
Hi all, sorry it's taken me sooo long to get back to you with an update. The site on the mobile isn't the easiest to find my previous posts. Your be glad to hear that Luna is still healing but getting better. Vet had told us to give it a month. Still not much movement in the leg but she can put weight on it and doesn't seem in pain. She will be waited on hand and foot. The vet said to play it month by month. Many thanks for the help and advice all.
