Two puppies or one dillema
My previous staffys sadly passed away, mum and son 16 and 14, my friends staffies have a litter of six I would like a brother and sister, is this advisable or should I just have one, got loads of room and a lonely little lurcher, who misses her mates, any advice or pros and cons would be great fully received.
Hope this gets posted ok and in the right topic not very good on these pc things

Re: Two puppies or one dillema
Hi and welcome from me and mine
You'll see from my avatar that I'm a fan of multi-dog households. However, I think you are right to be wary of getting litter mates. Even when the are different genders, it can still cause problems down the line as they don't have the same arm's length respect for each other. You do of course have many siblings who live happily together, and you also have unrelated dogs who have a problem, but siblings are more likely to have big problems than unrelated dogs. It's also very common that they are fine for a year or longer, then when they are big and strong it starts to go pear shaped.
To my mind, it's a risk that not worth taking. Apart from the double cuteness factor, I can't see too many up sides to taking two puppies together, whereas there are several negatives (in my opinion). It is much, much easier to train one dog at a time. One puppy is hard work, two puppies are double trouble. If you do hit a glitch with one dog as it is growing up, it is much harder to work on it when you have two youngsters.
You are also more likely to get a compatible personality if you know the character of one dog then look for one that complements it. You ideally want to avoid two strong personalities together, especially if there is no age to separate them.
As you already have your lurcher, I would get one dog that you feel will be a good match for her, then see if you feel a third dog is right. There is a risk that two pups might exclude her anyway.
Ultimately, though, you are the one who knows what your setup is, what your lurcher lady would be happy with, and whether you feel you could cope with the unknows that two could bring.
Whatever you decide, I hope you'll let us know and see pics of any newbies.
