Bad walk :(
hiya, had a bad experience last nite on a walk up the downs with Jemma.
We had her on the lead (we dnt let her off yet.)
as soon as we started walkin this HUGE staffie x came running over and jumping all over Jemma. To start with it was friendly but the other dog started goin for Jemma's throat.
my OH started pulling Jemma away but the dog jus kept comming. the owner of the other dog was miles away with the lead, and the bloke with her was jus standing there calling her, which obv did nuffin.
in the end i shouted at the bloke to get his f...king dog away from mine, but he couldnt do ne thing as it dint even have a collar on it.
Eventually the woman come over with the lead and half choke collar n jus sed tht shes not normally like tht. dint even apoligise.
Poor Jemma was shaking and everything. We managed to calm her down and check her over for cuts, but she seemed ok
we got her back to my OH's house, and found some scratches on her belly from the other dog, it was lucky it dint get her wound.
i was so mad.

Re: Bad walk :(
Why are people such dickheads?
You try to be responsible & bring your dog up the right way, and you get isiots like that - they give the breed a terrible name.
Hope Jemma's none the worse for her experience, but you might need to do a bit of socialising with friendly dogs so she can forget the nasty experience!

What a shock, makes me so angry! If you can't control your dog, keep it on lead! Just be aware next time you go there again. What numpties, big hugs to Jemma, and you Xx

Re: Bad walk :(
the thing is with Jemma she can be very playful and boysterous. she thought this dog was playin, until it started goin for her throat.
We have never had a problem before, every dog she meets she jus sniffs and wants to play with thm. i dnt have any one i no tht has a dog, so she will only interact with dogs tht she passes round the lake we go to.
i hope this dnt affect the way she is with other dogs.
i almost kicked the dog off her. i got inbetween the 2 of them and hav a massive scratch down my thigh where the other dog jumped up at me to get to Jemma

Re: Bad walk :(
I'd have kicked the dog. I love dogs & wouldn't ever hurt one deliberately, but my own dog comes first! If that's what it takes, then do it. It's the other owner's fault for not being in control.
I mean, what would have happened if she had been off the lead? She might have panicked & run off, poor thing.

If it were me I would allow her short interactions with dogs she has consistantly gotten along with and be hesitant new interactions. I would also keep a close eye on her body language and listen to what she was communicating. Wish you the best.

Re: Bad walk :(
she does not know any other dogs, we normally jus let her sniff thm as she walks passed. i will jus be aware of her body language tonite.

Re: Bad walk :(
Aww poor jemma!! .. like caryll said my dogs come before any one elses so if one was to ever try and go at mine i would shuv it out the way etc .. Some people have no control over there dogs what so ever and are dumb when it comes to restraining and a dogs body language etc.

Re: Bad walk :(
I tend to be overcautious and watch not only both of the dogs behaviors and body language but that of the handlers as well. If they are inattentive I will keep Suki away to avoid an incident.

Re: Bad walk :(
Yeah let her have a sniff and try to be as normal as possible but just keep an eye out for body language. You cant keep her away from other dogs because of 1 muppet she needs friends lol.

Re: Bad walk :(
I agree with caryll i would have kicked the other dog personally, as much as i wouldn't want to but harvey comes before the other dog.
* owners like that drive me mad and give the breed such a bad rep.
Hope Jemma is feeling better now ><

I would just act as if never happened I'm sure she will get past the incident providing that you do as well. Our dogs pickup on our energy and I'm sure she was upset by the dog and the tension it sounds like it caused you.
I would suggest that you bring a second lead with you and if anything like this happens again you put the lead on the other dog and give it a common command like "sit" until the owner comes to retrieve it.This will give you the chance to speak your mind to the other owner and maybe educate them a bit.I'm sure most of us have had an issue like this at one time or another and the 2nd lead was just my solution.Hope this helps

Re: Bad walk :(
That is a terrible story - just shows it doesnt matter how much effort you put in with your own dog there are always irresponsible owners.
9 times out of 10 I walk my dog I have my kids with me and have thought about this happening. It really scares me so far I have been ok with other owners never being far from their dogs I'll think about it every time I walk now and wont take the kids unless my other half is with us, would be hard to protect my kids and my dog on my own

Re: Bad walk :(
Laineybell I hope Jemma is ok ....( and you too ,for that matter )
there are some real morons out there that should not be allowed to have dogs ( or any pet for that matter !! ) but they muck it up for people who do the right thing !

Re: Bad walk :(
We have had it a few times were other peoples dogs have come up and they are either really far away or not even there at all in some case.
We just stay calm and I normally step forward first welcome the dog, if it gets funny then send it away if its ok let the dogs interact, if the other dog starts with any behaviour I am not happy with stop it and send it on its way.
The other dog was only playing rough by the sounds of it and really the other owner should have stepped in at that point and made it clear thats not acceptable, but if the other owners not there or not doing that then its upto you to do so.
If it was truely an aggressive dog then you would of had alot more trouble, dogs dont mess about when they want to attack, this is not a case of the dog wanting to attack, just dose not know how to behave cos its owners have not taught it.
Anyway glad your dog is ok and some more posative experiances of socialization will soon fix any wrong in this case.
