bad breath
hi everyone, just looking for advise, alfs breath lately is realy bad, normaly when it gets a bit smelly he goes to the vets to have his anal gland done plus keep his worming up to date, also his appitite is up and down, but he normaly gets like like when the weather is hot anyway, hes happy enough goes for walks like an idiot and still destroying the house on a regular basis not weeing or drinking anymore often than usual(first thing they mention on vet websites because of liver/kidney probs) a while ago he also had a urine test because of cyctitus(cant spell) but everything was normal after the antibiotics, just wondering if anyone can help, cheers all

Re: bad breath
If he's had antibiotics it could be an after effect of that. The anti-bs destroy all the bacteria in the gut, including the good ones.
Try giving some plain, pro biotic yogurt (full fat, no artificial sweeteners). Half a pot a day for 3 or 4 days & see if that helps.

Re: bad breath
If it was that long ago, then probably not. Have you checked his teeth & gums? If one of the teeth is bad, or if he has a gum infection it can make the breath smell.
How's his poop? (there we go again, talking about poo! )

Re: bad breath
But it's firm? If it is, I'd say it isn't a stomach problem as such.
Have you checked his mouth?

Re: bad breath
yes its nearly always firm, i had a look in his mouth today, all his teeth are nice and white, cant see any swelling on his gums or breaks in his teeth, i think im going to pop him to the vet tomorrow anyway just to be on the safe side,

Re: bad breath
sorry didn't have time to get on here last night, vet said nothing to worry about, just a case of being spoiled with to much meat, and it made his belly abit to acidic , he's going to have to stop being so fussy and find a complete biscuit that he will stick to, because he still won't touch tinned,

I don't like rubbishing vets, but too much meat? What did he mean by that? Mine eats nothing but meat & he isn't smelly (well, not at that end, anyway!).

Re: bad breath
I'm sorry but i don't think thats the case as feeding meat, offal bones and that is actually meant to help prevent 'doggie breath'

Re: bad breath
surely a vet wouldn't just dismiss it as that though? bit worried now

A lot of vets are totally against raw feeding & have come up with quite a few ways of furning people away from it. This is another one by the sound of it. I really don't see why eating meat would make a dog's stomach acidity high, when their stomach acid is designed to break down meat! They're carnivores, after all.
By all means change him on to a complete food if that's what you want, but I wouldn't put bad breath down as a reason.

Bacteria builds up fine in a damp and warm mouth, and I would imagine that it is that.
Also, what he eats can be an obvious factor.
Toothbrushing is done by some people, others make do with just ensuring the dog has other ways to enjoy better oral hygiene.

Chappie, for all that it doesnt have fancy packaging, is cost effective and pretty good, I've found.

Re: bad breath
These treats are awsome for helping combat bad breath as they clean their teeth.

Also obviously cleaning with doggie toothpaste regular could help, or another good one is Charcoal. We sprinkle charcoal on fish for dogs complete food with a little salmon oil and it works great. The charcoal stops bad smells at both ends, an the salmon oil and fish for dogs complete is great for skin and coat.
