Re: is 2 dogs better than one
It all depends on your situation and what you can cope with, really. And also of course the dogs.
We have had at least 2, up to 4, for years with very few problems but when we did have a problem it was fairly major. There is always that risk, regardless of the breed. It is, though, a possibility that you have to have your eyes open to when you go in.
The pros of having more than one dog to me outweigh the cons. They keep each other company and interact in a way humans don't. I don't think that for ultra human dogs like staffies they replace human company, but they certainly add another dimension to their lives. They are a complete and utter joy to watch together.
You do, though, need to be prepared to have your lives and house turned upside down. This is a brief example of what we get on a regular basis

You need to invest more time in training and management to ensure that you can ask them to be quiet, to make sure everyone knows whose bowl is whose, to make sure they know how to walk on leads without getting tangled up, etc. For me, clarity and training are essential to a multi-dog household.
Clearly, 2 dogs are more expensive than one. Double all your bills. Double your poo scooping and housework, and expect some damage as things get knocked over, etc.
I personally would say to consider different sorts of dog before making a choice. It might be that an older, steadier dog might mix better with your young lad. Two adolecent boys, or even a young girl, might be more than you'd bargained for. And also consider temperaments - 2 assertive dogs are more likely to spat than and assertive one with a submissive one.
So lots and lots to think about. Yes, do think about it because if it does work for you it's a great idea, but it's equally something not to rush into without being sure.

Maybe foster a dog from a rescue short-term and see how you both like it.

Yeah, I was gonna suggest foster. This way you can see how your dog reacts to the different dogs and what suits best. You could then always keep one of the fosters that really gels with him.
