Re: how to calm down a male when female in heat
I'm not sure there's an answer to this, other than maybe seeing if there is somewhere Bruno could go and stay for a week or so until Tia is off heat. He is only responding as his hormones tell him to - it must be incredibly difficult for him. Telling him 'no' won't do any good so I wouldn't bother, the only thing it might do is get you cross which isn't good for anyone.
Glad to hear that you are planning on getting at least one of them neutered. I hope that calms everything down and you're back to having 2 chilled pups soon.

Re: how to calm down a male when female in heat
Hi, I am looking for similar advice. Percy's 'best friend' an 8 month old GSD is having her first season and we have met them out on our walk (despite trying to go at different times and routes!) He is beside himself, whining, won't eat, running to the door. she has 2 weeks left. maybe there is another bitch near us too. Any advice would be great. he is 15 months old, not neutered and we aren't planning to do so. He has a mixture of buddies, male and female and if we are out walking and at all unsure how he'll react to a new dog he goes back on the lead. Other than that he's a great dog.

Re: how to calm down a male when female in heat
I am afraid its a pain I have had this with Vinnie despite not walking with his female friend dog and as you say taking different routes but a dog can smell a bitch in season from up to 3 miles away. I used a spray cant remember name now that calms them down and it did seem to work. There is only a certain time of the bitches season when they are at their most fertile as my boy only seemed to be like it at that time as after that time and before he took no notice of her at all. Good luck hope it gets better soon x

There's little you can do other than keeping them apart.
Your friend is actually being a little irresponsible by taking an in season bitch out whilst other dogs are around. I would personally only take an in season bitch out at times when other dogs, are not around - or confine then to the garden until danger is passed!

^^^^^ yes I do agree with this as a dog can come from anywhere and "be on her" in seconds so much safer to keep her in

I agree with the above. Before Misty was spayed she had a season after we got her. I walked her at four and five am and only Street walks, no park time. It's not fair on any male dogs.

Thank you for your replies. I'll see how he manages over the next week or 2. Hopefully both girls will have finished their season by then!

Have you thought about getting an Adaptil spray? It might take the edge off his, um, needs!

Hi Gilly, yes i had some of this at home. I sprayed his harness with it before walking him last night and this morning. Can't say i saw any result lol! I have sprayed his bed too. . I think lead walks only for a few days until his 'needs' hopefully ease!

Re: how to calm down a male when female in heat
Heat exacerbating heat!!
In this current verrrrry hot weather the sensitivity increases for all concerned - bitches in heat and males around bitches in heat - things can be a lot more dramatic than when the weather is milder or even chilly/cool.
Hot air carries the female scent, with a kind of increased 'strength' so to speak and the male who will/could well be panting due to the hot temperature has heightened sense of smell also.
Separate, as per above preferably in different properties, or if no can do - in coldest rooms of the house - I used to have 2 fans running constantly in this kind of weather to keep each pooch cool...
Just a thought... x

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. Percy has been a lot calmer this last 2 days. I drove him away from the village at the weekend and walked him for 2 hours. he came home and slept all day! I think he is generally worn out by it all!
