Irish Staffie
Hi Just joined the club. Have got an Irish Staffie called Duke, he is just over 11 years now. Had thyroid cancer in 2012 so will be cancer free four years in May this year. He is a great dog.
Just wondering if anyone has similar problem with their Staffie. As I said he is 11 years old, he is eating ok, not being sick, drinking fine, lively as he can be due to his age, but he is losing weight, nearly skin and bone. He has regular check ups every 4months with blood tests etc to check his thyroid (he is on leventa) and all tests always come back ok, they also check him for lumps etc but all ok. We just cannot understand the weight loss issue. Has anyone experienced anything like this with their dog. Many thanks

many thanks for that. we have considered it and I will speak to another practice tomorrow. Just hope something can be sorted. If we took him to the rspca they would lock us up!!! People must think we don't feed him!! I will keep you informed of progress.

Re: Irish Staffie
Hi guys, thanks for your concerns. Its weird as we have just weighed him and he is exactly the same as he was in December!!! Whether it is just us convincing ourselves that he has lost weight I don't know. When I look back at the visits to the vets he has remained at 20kg for a while now. I think we may be worrying for no reason, but we are going to keep a very careful eye on it though and weight him every few weeks. If he does start to lose weight we will definitely be taking him back for a second opinion. Thanks again for your replies

Re: Irish Staffie
Sometimes they just look skinnier, but they've not actually lost weight. It's so stressfully worrying, isn't it? Hope all is fine.

Re: Irish Staffie
It certainly is worrying especially when you know how stocky staffies are and he was very stocky. He did lose weight after his chemo and radiotherapy but then put it back on again. The vet said it was just down to him getting older but you automatically think they would put weight on instead. Anyway hes happy enough, eating, drinking and energetic to a point, but considering hes over 11 you have to think of a human as they sometimes lose lots of weight when they get older. Fingers crossed anyway as long as he continues to eat and respond I don't think I will worry too much!! Thanks for your help much appreciated. Just nice to listen to other points of view. I will definitely update if anything changes.

Hello and a warm welcome to the forum to you and Duke It's only natural to worry and can understand your concerns but think it's better to be slightly under than overweight

Re: Irish Staffie
I know exactly what you mean. His weight has always been ok and probably that's why we were a bit worried about it now, but as the vet said staffies can quite often go thin when they are older. As long as hes happy and eating I don't think I have anything to worry about at the moment. Thanks for your help

Re: Irish Staffie
If he's eating well and happy in himself then I guess the vets advice is fine but I can understand why you would be concerned.

Re: Irish Staffie
Yes he is eating well now, not a great deal but vet said that's another thing of old age!!! but he is definitely eating and drinking normally for his age. theyre worse than children!!! pity they couldn't talk and tell you what was wrong, it would make all our lives much simpler I think!! thanks
