Charlie's raw food diary!
So ... After alot of reading, contemplating and weighing up the options ... I've decided that raw is the way that I want to go with Charlie. There are so many benefits according to alot of reports, so here we are!
I got myself and old freezer from the grandparents, popped it in the garage! My first lot of food has come from 'RawTdoor' who are based in Durham, check them out on facebook .. very helpful!
So I guess, tomorrow morning I'm going to start with minced chicken carcass .. Approx 500g per day, split probably over 3 meals for the first week or so to get him used to it ... Nervous about it, but im sure it'll be fine in the long run!
Enjoy the progress, any advice is welcome!

No advice other than see how you get on and ask if you've got any questions.

Re: Charlie's raw food diary!
Well, he's had 3 meals now!
Took a while to defrost as I left it in the packaging to start with!
Started with minced chicken carcass, 200g per meal ... He absolutely loves it!!
Tummy seems to be ok aswell, just keeping an eye on it!
Usually, he would sniff around his food at first for a bit, then nibble at it here and there but with this... He's up at the bench wanting it straight away!!
I do have a question, I can't see why not ... But the blood thats in the bottom of the container from the fridge, should I drizzle that on there for him aswell, I presume that wont do any harm?
p.s why on earth are the pictures always sideways?!

Re: Charlie's raw food diary!
It won't do any harm at all. Drizzle away... The minces we get come in 454g bags - now you know why we call them 'bloody bags'.
I'm glad Charlie's enjoying it, it's good to find a food that makes their eyes light up, isn't it?
(no idea about the sideways photos, I've never had that problem)

Re: Charlie's raw food diary!
He had some minced chicken again for his tea tonight, but I cracked a whole egg in their too and left the shell in ... He was unsure at first, but didnt take long for him to wolf it down!
Jumping up at the food counter trying to eat it!
I'll start taking pictures on the digi cam rather than the iphone!
Really enjoying this, super happy watching him so excited for his food!

Re: Charlie's raw food diary!
I do give mine eggs (provided our useless chickens decide to lay any), but I don't give them the shells as I've had them being sick a few times afterwards. I think the scratchy shells irritate the stomach or something.

I kept an eye on him afterwards, he was fine, but I'll keep that in mind definately!
Mother in law came over today when she dropped my daughter off and walked him round the block, said his temperament has totally changed .... and much more solid dog doo!!
So it obviously doesn't take long to see the difference!!
Nightmare scenario today, came in and our freezer has packed up in the garage, so last minute trip to currys for me shortly to collect a new one ! Woo hoo!

The things we get excited about!
And yes, you do see the difference really quickly. Have you seen any change in his coat?

Well, as it happens .... It seems a little less shiny, but more healthy as in less greasy if that makes sense
I did notice tonight on his stomach when he laid down for a belly rub, hes got a bit of a rash on his belly, just a light shade of pink as if the hair is thinning in one spot ... Could this be an allergic reaction maybe or am i looking into things too much?

Sounds like you've hit on a winner here Mic.
Not sure about the rash but would be surprised if it was the food, I'm no expert mind you.

Re: Charlie's raw food diary!
Is he still just on chicken, Mic? If the rash persists or gets worse, change to another meat. Some dogs are allergic to chicken. I would expect a bigger reaction if it is an allergy though. Just one pink spot might be that he's rubbed himself for some reason.

Re: Charlie's raw food diary!
Yeah he is still on Chicken, Im probably scheduled to run out of chicken this Monday so will be moving onto Beef I think and see how he gets on with that.
I'm keeping a close eye on it! He's actually due his check up at the vets, so could be timed quite well to be honest!
Still loving his food, coat is looking brilliant, 'puppy fat' is starting to go and muscle starting to define a little more .... That might just be me wanting to see that though haha!

Re: Charlie's raw food diary!
Well ... 2 weeks in now and hes still enjoying it!
He's had tripe, chicken and lamb bones now!
Ox liver is in the fridge now defrosting to put with some chicken tomorrow to see what he's like on that!
Sooooo much calmer now! I wouldn't go as far as saying peaceful though!

Re: Charlie's raw food diary!
How's the skin? Has that patch cleared up?
Go really slowly with the liver, it'll more than likely give him dark and loose poos, even with just a little.
'peace' and 'young staffie'... in the same sentence? You must be kidding!
