Does your Staffie howl?
Hey everyone
Does you Staffie howl? My boy has only ever done this a handful of times in his life and is not a huge barker either, but what triggers it appears to be emergency services sirens, or similar. I never managed to capture it on video before but I was watching a film the other day and there was a siren type sound which made him do it and I managed to film him, bless!
He is sooo cute.... check it out

Oh how cute. Misty has never done that but she is very very vocal, always making noises or even crying if no one is paying attention to her!

Love it, both of mine do it but in different circumstances, Madge does it incredibly loudly with a toy in her mouth, I think she's showing off, but Max does it more softly when he's trying to get attention. Had an Akita who did it too.

Cute to us, but he looks a bit distressed to me. The ears are back, he's licking and yawning, and his eyes look worried. Maybe the sound hurts his ears?

That's a very good point Liz as you are quite correct, the signs my boy is displaying (apart from the cute factor to us mere humans) are indeed visible signs of distress, so it prompted me to do a bit of research on the internet which proved very interesting.
It appears that many dogs howl to the sounds of sirens or similar noises and it could range from answering the call/form of communication as instinctual behaviour from their wolves decedents, as an alert to a strange loud sound, or responding to a pitch and howling to chase the noise away, which could indeed account for his visible reactions and body language.
Thankfully this is something which he only ever done a handful of times if it is a distressing noise to him, which is more than I can say for the hideous fireworks we have to endure each year, which really does upset him massively... as I am sure many will agree
