Introducing my cat
Hello
My partner and I are moving in together over the weekend
He has a three year old male who is poorly trained (thanks to his daddy) and I have a 11 month old cat who is my darling.
I cannot sleep thinking about how I'm going to introduce them as they are both indoor animals.
Can anybody please give me some pointers as I have been up all night on google and have come across some sickening posts about dogs killing cats when you turn your back!
He's a loving and friendly dog but I know a lot of the times dogs and cats just don't go well. My cat has been raised around 2 dogs and she's fine with them but they are small Maltese boys I'm sure she will be scared of my bfs big boy.
Please help!

Re: Introducing my cat
Keep them apart and slowly introduce them and always make sure the cat can escape, baby gates are great, and as its an adult dog keep him on lead when you first introduce them, oh and have plenty patience.

Re: Introducing my cat
Echo the use of the lead. I'd keep them in separate rooms when you are not there, and then have the dog on a lead (preferably with a harness, not collar) so you can limit his movements.
Also, and this might be hard, try to relax when they are together. Your tension will transmit to the animals and may actually cause reactions that wouldn't be there otherwise. I know, easier said than done, but try!
I'd also be looking to muzzle train the dog now, so that when the time does come that you think you can try them together off lead but still supervised, if the worst does happen you have a safety net. This is a good video on how to do it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BjPpXer8IE
It might be an idea for your partner to start some basic training too. You definitely can teach older dogs new tricks, and better late than never!

Re: Introducing my cat
Good point Liz , Iza was a pup and i think its easier that way. In fact the cats still boss her around but patience is the key.

Re: Introducing my cat
Can't really offer any more advice than the excellent suggestions above. I do agree that you'll need to try and keep calm and the baby gate idea is a perfect escape route for your cat.
As Colin says, as long as the cat can get up high or away then all should be fine and with time and patience you'll wonder why you lost those hours of sleep I'm sure
