Great website i stumbled upon today.

http://rawfed.com/myths/omnivores.html

Incidentally, i was talking to my step sister today whose Pug had her first birthday, and during the conversation we got talking about dog food etc. Her friend and neighbour is a Vet, and told her that when she was studying they only did a single module about animal nutrition, and NOTHING specific to canine nutrition...This is what i suspected after receiving conflicting advice from several vets...I got the impression that they didn't know a great deal about nutrition, and almost nothing about raw food...One vet even told me that bones were dangerous, whilst another told me that they were safe as long as they were cooked!!
After doing more research i've since learnt that most Vets learn about canine and feline nutrition from Food Manufacturers..ie: salespeople...
Worrying.

my guys eat a mainly fish diet supplemented with zinc as the spitz gene is predominant and it works well for them. I like raw but have been trialing a new kibble with several working dog owners and I have to say its the nuts... result so far are great and will post up when all the guys get the results in.

been thinking of a raw diet for 'Lady' ..
after reading a few related posts on here ..

got her some chunks of stewing steak today ..
just to see if she'd like it ..
( bought some type of raw animal bits from a pet shop
( think they were pigs trotters .. or similar
( offered her one .. she turned her nose up at it
( don't blame her as they smelt really awful .. rancid ..
( i threw the bag in the nearest trash can ..

i know there are pages on here about introducing a raw diet ..
but just now used google .. 'n saw this article ..

Myself and a few guys off another group moved from raw to a dog food called akela for a test. As you may be aware my two bikejor and are staffy crosses, we also had bull lurchers, whippets, greyhounds, pure staffs and a doberman. apart from mine and the doberman the dogs are working. the dobe and my two are racers. I used to feed raw plus high protein kibble for and idea and others either did the same or just raw fed.
After a few weeks on this new food, small stools, better coat, high endurance and drive and less feed each meal. we were all won over by it over raw or raw/kibble mix
http://www.wholeprey.com/akela-80-20-dog-food.html
possibly one of the best foods out there imo and well worth consideration.

Nathan, I'm wondering if you got some advice, as said I've had Mav on akela since we got him obviously did a gradual change over to start, yet he's been proper on akela awhile now.

I was looking at moving over to raw as he's poo's can be a bit too soft, and is very smelly so I'm gonna list his "extra's" too see what might be the cause.

He eats 70% akela kibble
20 % wainwrights puppy tray http://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/dog-food-reviews/0476/wainwrights-trays-puppy
Kong's with natural yogurt, banana and peanut butter
Dried chicken liver treats very few only on recall training and odd toiletting reinforcement.

Cheers for any help
Pat

He at most has 1 Kong a day that has about1 1/2 table spoons of natural low fat yougart in, mixed with a bit of banana and whole meal peanut butter

Mainly used when he gets left for any space of time, or a teaspoon of just whole meal peanut butter.

I would need some idea of what to fill instead maybe chicken stock? I'm guessing the packet stock is no good as too many advertises?

Gizmo has worked out where all our hens lay and is therefore sneakily eating somewhere between one and five eggs every freaking day. There's no way that can be good for him, right?

He's not working at the minute, but I'm looking into training of some sort now that he's hit 18 months. His genetics are 3 Grandparents Staffordshire Bull Terrier, 1 Grandparent Rotty/AmBulldog so he's fairly high energy and rather protective of his garden.

The hens lay all over the garden, so Gizzy sniffs the eggs out and eats them. He's sneaky.
