Frozen fish

just a quick question has anyone ever given their pup/ dog a frozen fish before? Someone told me that it's good for them and that they've done that with their dog for years, I know cooked bones are a no but frozen fish bones? I'm not so sure on is it safe?

Good question, would like to know myself.

Well my partners grandfather fed his dog can't remember the breed but think it was a big dog, I frozen fish every morning and then gave him a god liver oil tab and he always had a gorgeous shiny coat, I just ain't sure about the fish bones? They are small but if frozen won't they just break wether chewed?

You can go to a fishmonger and ask them to debone the fish i think depends the type of fish whether they can swallow the bones or not

I would say avoid yellow smoked haddock the bones are pretty had to get out very rubbery and a choke hazard

We've never feed Suki fish with bones in it. We will debone them for her on occasion but always err on the side of caution. There are also fish oil supplements to help with the coat.

I think you would be fine with fish like the tinned sardines Emma. The ones in sunflower oil, not ketchup As you probably know the backbone in them is very soft, and you could just split the fish into individual ones and freeze them. Hope that helps

i feed milie fresh sardines from the fish mongers as part of her raw diet, fish is fine the best fish to buy are small ones, and never buy fish that swims up river as they have high mercury content which is poisonous for example salmon.
stick with sardines, white bait which are tiny, mackeral, herring, and a few others that a similar, you can feed partially frozen but best to defrost and feed fresh hope this helps

Fish lollies! Yes, ours have them all the time, frozen in the summer as a cooling treat in the afternoon. Whole fish, innards 'n all. They have mackerel, sole, gunard, whatever Landywoods has in stock. They had whole (farmed) salmon heads the other day, which kept them quiet for a few minutes!

Yup, bones and all. Because Marley's still quite young, I'd start with small fish with soft bones - maybe sardines - and get gutted ones. Make sure he's ok with them first, then build up.

I personally find they cope better with them frozen as there bones then don't stick out, but once they're used to them either frozen or not seems fine. And fish heads are good too (as long as you have your eyes closed...).

I just fed Maya a tin of John West sardines in sunflower oil for her supper, and she bloody devoured them. I think i will include these as part of her daily diet now.

Great news, will have to give them a try. Might start off with john west sardines in sunflower oil to see if he is a fishy eater.

Maya is the same after partaking in Tuna as well And i have no idea what Glen20 is

Gizmo does better with the frozen fish because he has to take the time to chew instead of just gulping it down.

Same dav I'm going to start with a sardine first then move on to some mackerel if he enjoys it haha glad she enjoyed it terry I fed Marley salmon dry food last week and that stank so god help you and the sardines thanx for the reply goblin definitely going to give it a go

Just gave Samba his first feed of sardines with his usual dinner meal, at first he was unsure as he licked one then looked at me but i gave him the 'eat' command & he just hoovered them up. Looks like ill be feeding him a tin of 'sardines in oil' once a week now. Thanks for suggesting it

I give Misty a can of sardines,tuna,mackerel in sunflower oil or spring water once a week or so as a topper on her food. She loves them, and just inhales them!

My wee Otis absolutely loves tinned sardines/mackerel etc and has a tin once or twice a week. The oil is good for their coats and they seem to love the taste.

Have to lay off the kisses for a time when he's finished eating them though - stinky staffie breathe
