sore on ear won't stop scratching

Hanna is 10 months old and we've been lucky no problems up until now.

She has got a sore on her ear from scratching and it keeps healing, but she will scratch it and knock it making it worse.

I think she might of had flees or similar at first, which caused her to scratch. She got treated straight away with frontline.

What should we do ?

There are anti itch sprays as well as products that promote healing. There is also the head collar option.

Thornit powder might be worth looking into but if it's getting so bad then it's probably worth a vet visit to make sure there's no infection in the ear.

i would advise a vet tbh sounds like your dog has an ear infection .

wash the area in warm salt water just until you get to a vet it will keep the area clean at least .

My boy (Samba) was scratching his right ear & shaking his head very roughly/hard for the past week, so i took him to the vets yesterday & the vet found he had a ear infection in the right ear. The vet treated it & gave me some treatment so i can treat it at home for the next week. So far so good, he has stopped the scratching & heading shaking & its only been a day so far. You would be better off to take Hanna to the vets so the vet can have a look in her ears, its better to be safe then sorry.

Hi, I took Hanna to the vets and they said she was being irritated by something, but not flees or anything.
They gave her a course of steroids to stop the itching and yesterday she didn't scratch her sore ear, but she did again today so hoping she will leave it alone for long enough to heal.
Also the vet check inside her ear and it needs cleaning out, so were doing that also.
I think if she won't leave it alone, I'm going to have to use a cone collar in near future.
I'm watching her like a hawk today.

Try some Manuka honey on the actual wound to promote healing (Worked wonders on Bug's surgery wounds). I'm conflicted regarding a cone, it may heal but she will potentially be very uncomfortable not being able to scratch something that's really irritating her. Hopefully the steroids will start to help soon. Did the vet recommend an antihistamine at all to help with the itching?

Thanks, I'll try some Manuka honey, the vet didn't recommend any anti histamine, she's on Prednisolone steroids.

I hope it gets better soon! Bane has had awful itchy ears throughout his life and even itched away the hair at one point so he had baldy ears!

He has a dust mite allergy so this is the cause of the itching. We find what helps is a daily clean with 50/50 Apple Cider Vinegar/Water, every other day spray with a steroid spray and if he gets really bad he wears his cone while we are out.

It is so frustrating as it can take so long to heal! Fingers crossed for you

Thanks, pleased to say Hanna finished her steroids and the sore has healed up leaving a quite large bold spot on her ear, but she seems 100%
