Cake When did you leave your pup unsupervised?

Post by Jerome Mon May 04 2015, 06:05

Hey Guys!

Arlo is nearly 12 weeks and doing well, his toilet training isn't perfect but I can see improvements.
At the moment he is in his pen when unsupervised, and when he's roaming around the house
I've relaxed my supervision a little because he's been behaving pretty well.

My question is, at what age did you let your pup have free roam of the house unsupervised?
Was it when they were potty trained? Or was there another distinct marker that let you know they were safe..

Thanks!

I'd pick a room that he already knows, dog proof it as much as you can and let him have free roam for short periods (very short periods while he gest used to it). Get down on your knees and look for any tempting goodies, such as remote controls, shoes, ornaments, etc. and make sure you unplug any electric cables. Find things he can then chew - my favourite is cardboard food packaging with a treat hidden in it for them to find - so that he has something to explore and do.

You'll then get a better feel for how he will react. At the end of the day, though, you'll have accidents and you will have the odd shoe or something chewed. Prevent as much as you can by thinking ahead you'll then be as safe as you can. And other than that, welcome to the world of puppies!

When we picked pepper up we found out that she'd been previously sold and had spent 4/5 days locked in a crate so there and then I made the decision to let her roam (to some extent). If we go out or of a night time we close off the kitchen and that's where she sleeps. We have her crate in the kitchen with all her bedding in and we leave the door open so she can build up her confidence with wandering in and out although saying that ill never lock her in.

The kitchen is completly puppy proofed so she's entirely safe and during the day we let her roam around the house although most of the time she only goes upstairs if someone is with her. We leave puppy pads down which she's good at using. I wouldn't leave her roaming if no one home for no other reason than everything would be shredded by the time anyone got home Laughing

The only other thing id add if u plan leaving the dog in the kitchen is make sure food and cleaning products are in a secure cupboard as high and far away from the pup as possible remove any low table so they cant attempt to explore and injure themselves. Smile

That's how we handled it as well. You can increase the size of the area and time left unsupervised gradually

I'd pick a room such as kichen,, that's where I put my dog when we're out or eating etc,, I tthink best place is kichen as you can clean any accidents up easier.

I got my boy at 10 months and let him have run of the whole house straight away...bad move. They will find ways to entertain themselves and they don't care what they destroy in the process! So good advice from above, keep to one room, kitchen is probably best so any accidents can be cleaned up easily as well.

My Spudley lives in the kitchen (until it gets too cold in winter), and sleeps in his crate...I always leave the door open..only closing for a minute or so when i need to mop up..
When i need to, i use a large puppy pen...This means that when i'm in there cooking i can fence him in, so i don't tread on him or more than likely, he won't burn himself on the oven door...It's reflective and he loves admiring his own good looks in it.
Incidentally, sometimes i get in the pen with him...today when the dinner was on, he climbed on me and licked his way through a frozen banana Kong!
Also when i go to bed, i set the pen up again, but this time a little larger so he can roam around but cannot chew drawer fronts, bin raid etc..He also has enough room to play and toilet...makes life so easy in the morning.

I think it also depends on your dog - buddy is six months and is always crated at night and if we are out- reason being - he can make mischief out of nothing! I have an opened planned house so no room to shut him in - we do pop upstairs to the loo etc and leave him downstairs - sometimes ok sometimes not.. I aim to let him have the run of the house at some point but at the minute a kong and a crate are Buddy's best friends when we go out - he has no issues with the crate - and I know he is safe
