warning for walking in fishing areas and discarded hooks, lines.
Yesterday I was walking my 21 mth old staffy around one of the local parks. I normally have her of the lead now (have done for at least 8 mths) she is a pretty obedient dog I might add.
anyways there were a number of lads fishing, at one part of the lake, and Jenny being herself, is a friendly well socialised dog, walked over to say hello. she went for a wonder, and next thing she came out the scrub with some fishing line hanging out her mouth. I panicked when the lad said, she had just took some bait with was thrown to one side. I managed to get the line out. but thinking the worse. I immediately rang the PDSA. thankfully they were able to see her. they x-rayed her to find the hook in her stomach!! she had an emergency operation last night to remove the hook. she is now home, but in some considerable pain. (think about having your chest/torso cut open then muscles cut apart, then stomach cut open, to be stitched up again)
you are probably wondering why im writing this. im just wanting to let people know the dangers of letting your dog roam about, whilst fishing is going on. I will not be going near that area again.
also a BIG THANK YOU to the PDSA in the uk, who are thankless heroes! if anything they have saved my precious dog a lifetime of pain. She gets her stitches out a week Thursday.
I was told the operation, with treatment and x-rays come to a total of about £480, I could only afford £130 at the time. the staff were surprised when I handed over the amount, but I will be giving more when I return to the practice.
sorry this was a little long winded but I just had to say it

This is something Im always wary of as I fish alot & Yoda is often running around the beach off lead etc. I always ask my fishing mates to be careful leaving stuff around or even having bait on hooks anywhere at all that Yoda can get them.
But its still always going to be a risk.
Also on the beach its just not fishing items to be aware of you can come across fish that can be poisonous etc also such as blowfish etc & dogs being digs you need to keep them away as best you can.
Most fisherman I know always take care & take what they bring home with them but its not hard to lose a hook in the sand etc so care is always needed.

Thanks for sharing this with us, it's not something most of us would readily think about. a horrible thing for jenny to have gone through and wish her a speedy recovery.

Re: warning for walking in fishing areas and discarded hooks, lines.
hi guys,
first of all, thank you for all the well wishes. this is just an update.
I took Jenny to the vets today, she has had stitches removed, and has been discharged. she still has a few weeks to go, in the recovery of herself. but I've been advised by them, not to take her for long walks for about 10 days/2 wks. Once again thanks for your support
