I started my training to become a trainer so today peppa attended 2 groups and of course was a complete star although in her own cheeky way! The funny thing was in the 2nd group wa did a puppy recall that is really beyond her so trainer asked to call them enthusiastically and pups got too happy so jumped all over me. I trained her myself but its good to learn new skills and how the professionals do it but sometimes I prefer my way but at least now I can compare.

I'm volunteering Sundays with sue & ceri evans and attending training sessions for a while now with Susan Close that I find brilliant. Got to have hand on experience so I can do my next step which is distance studies as don't have the time for full time studies.
What do you think of my plan?  Any alternative plan to become a trainer/behaviourist or alternative good trainers in london will be appreciated!

Wow, what a fab thing to be doing. I've had a look at their website but it doesn't say much about their philosophy or anything. What sort of methods do they use?

Positive training Liz . I'm just a beginner but I believe that every dog is different and there is more than one way so wanna watch and analyse more trainers. the best advice I've got so far is that even I completely disagree with what I see I can learn what not to do.
I was trying over a year to find a place to volunteer (battersea, dogs trust etc) but to my surprise find none in London.

And very good advice that is too! Add to that 'why', as in why don't I like it.

The other thing I'd advise, having trained as a horse trainer, is to watch and read everything you can. Everyone's ideas are worth exploring even if, as you say, you end up not agreeing with them. Watch videos with the sound turned down too, as body language can often tell you a different story from the one the person says.

Have you picked up on the woman that Rach and I bang about, Patricia McConnell. 'The Other End of the Leash' and 'For the Love of the Dog' are must reads! 'Don't Shoot the Dog' by Karen Pryor is a great book too.

You're kidding you can't find somewhere to volunteer? Come up to Essex and we'll bite your hand off (figuratively!)

I heard about her and will order the books. At the moment I'm reading "how dogs learn" by burch and bailey. Where about in Essex Liz? If there's a good access from west london Ill find the time to do it.

Quite far north for you, just outside Braintree (postcode CM7 4EQ). If it's not too far, let me know! We've just started to do some structured training with the dogs and I'm fairly sure that any knowledgable help would be more than welcome.

I thought that would be the answer. Google dog rescues near you, there have to be some smaller ones that aren't so far.
