Today's the day :)
today is the day we can finally take Marley out on his first walk so some tips would be great please, I've heard that allowing Marley off the lead straight away is gd? So I've been practicing recall in the house and he's mastered that I've been getting him used to his lead but he doesn't like it very much so tips with that would be great please

Marleys walk went great he was abit frantic on his lead at 1st so I didn let him off, he came around quickly tho and he looked lyk he was enjoying himself, met his 1st beagle which was very friendly another walk or two now then I'll let him off I think

Better make sure is an enclosed area when you let him off for first time, cause they are wee buggers to catch at times remember chasing Iza round the graveyard once she thought it was great to hide behind the gravestones.

Re: Today's the day :)
Great stuff, let the fun begin
Practice the lead and collar/harness in the house by popping it on and off at different times not just walking time, that way he'll get used to it at anytime. Also, attach the lead in the house too so that he gets used to that trailing which should make him more comfortable when you have it in your hands.

Re: Today's the day :)
Exciting times! I personally believe in letting them off straight away, mixing with some on lead work too, because on their early walks they tend not to have the confidence to go very far. If Marley does start to stray, walk away from him and he should follow you.

Re: Today's the day :)
Glad it went well I hope his recall work goes well once you get the courage Bane was far too eager to meet new people and raring to go so at almost 2 his recall is still awful!
Just remember to make yourself the most exciting thing there! Take treats and toys, whatever can grab his attention! Running away from them works for most dogs I think! Good Luck Bet he is having a great time!

Re: Today's the day :)
When you're out with him in a safe place just drop the lead and keep walking and don't make a big thing of it until you recall him then plenty of praise and treats for coming back. Do you have a a cycle track near you? We found them great as she only had two ways to go because of the long grass on either side.

Re: Today's the day :)
That's a gd idea I'll try then tomorrow no nothing lyk that by me all open huge fields! Except that park that's always quiet wen I take my daughter it's the only place enclosed, and Marley isn't getting chipped till July which is why I'm worried about letting him off anywhere else, he comes to me when I can him around the house but when we are out he's pulls so I'm sure he'd run from me
