Behavior and Discipline
So, quick question about behavior and discipline preluded with a long story so that it all makes sense.
We've elected to control unwanted nipping with a firm no, followed by ignoring (when that fails we repeat, when the repeat fails we say NO again, followed by offering one of her toys to chew on).
However, shes not responding to her name (it's only been 2 days, so no biggie there), but she still barely responds to praise (even high squeaky happy praise), and when disciplined, when we go to ignore her, she just doesn't care. She'll see us ignoring her, then scamp away to drink/play with toys/chew on my carpet.
Is this "not really caring about us" a stress/new environment thing, or do we have a dog who's content to be aloof?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Behavior and Discipline
Not sure what to tell you the training stategy you are using is similar to the approach I took and had sucess with. I couldn't get Suki to stop following me when I first got her home. Perhaps it is just the stress and she will come around soon.

Yeah. We've even simply walked away and went inside the house while she was outside (we monitored from the widow and back door) and she didn't even care. Just went back to chewing on her toy.

Re: Behavior and Discipline
Sounds like you are doing the right thing, I did not really start to try and train our Stanley until he was almost 10weeks and fully adjust to his new home. He is now 13 weeks and is starting to really pick up new tricks quickly. He still tends to bite a little bit but usually when he is waking me up in bed in the morning to let me know it is breaky time otherwise it is when we are playing and he starts to get a bit carried away. I normal stop the game at this stage and try to get him to settle if he still does not settle a few minutes in time out in the bathroom gets him back to normal, we have only needed to time him out about 5 times though which I feel is really good. I hope this might be some help to you

well that could be a good thing.. trust me a clingy dog is very hard work.. I know.. Jethro was so clingy .. it was driving us bonkers... We put our puppy Winston outside and just leave him to his own devices for a while.. don't want to make the same mistake with him. He loves being with us.. but he also loves time on his own, doing his own things... ( which normally amount to trouble !! ) Have to find that happy medium !

You have a perfectly normal pup!
Give it time and you'll see the difference!

As Caryll said, this is normal. It's a huge adjustment for her to make. Just keep doing what you're doing, and she'll soon get the hang of it

Jimi was exactly the same when we got him a couple of weeks ago. He looked like he couldnt care less when we'd ignore him but doing it regularly is starting to pay off now. He doesn't like it and knows to stop.
He does still nip but when we give him a toy he sticks to that.

Re: Behavior and Discipline
When they are small and very young they have a very short attention span but are taking everything in just not retaining very well. But in a matter of weeks when she realises you now love and care for her and she can consentrate more you will see a huge difference she is very normal

Re: Behavior and Discipline
Archie a little bit nippy doo. I think its the pups way of being hands on with everything. Just be persistent with no. And you dont approve of that behaviour they soon catch on.

Re: Behavior and Discipline
Shes catching on quckly to the no nipping rules. Our concern was that she just didn't care about people that much.
After her first full night alone she's really turned around.
Thanks for all the advice and comments everyone.

Re: Behavior and Discipline
all my dogs have been different, my first sam chewed everything in sight but my xena only chew a pack of card, sam was well easy to house train billie chew everything she could get her teeth on.
Re: Behavior and Discipline
So true. Voodoo loves chewing everything but her toys.
At this point, she already has Liz wrapped around her little paw, and I'm quickly on my way!

Re: Behavior and Discipline
For her responding to her name, try giving treats whenever you call and eye contact is made. Everything takes time and a lot of patience.
