Does your Staffy like walks
We have had Libby for about 3 months now. She is a Rescue dog about 2years old. At the moment she is on heat.
Of course we are still on a learning curve, and things are going very well. But ...... she does not seem to want to like her walks very much. Husband loves dog walking and our old Staff cannot go very far now, and we thought Libby would be like him in his younger days and just love being out over the fields and road walks, sometimes it is great, but more often than not, she gets so far then refuses to move, and great hurry to get home. She is a bit food obsessed, so have tried feeding her first. I get the feeling that in her previous life, she may have been one of those Staffs that just follow their owner, but we dare not try that, as uncertain that she may go for cats or other dogs, though she is not at all aggressive. Just wondered if anyone else has a staff that is not keen on walks and loves being home. She has bonded really well with me but at the moment due to leg op cannot go out with them. Must add that we have biggish garden, she loves that dashes around chasing shadows, flying birds, sees the pigeons off, goes mad , when she is out there, never still, she likes me to be out there with her or at least to see me through door.
Would so like to hear if anyone else has experienced this, and want to find a way for her to enjoy walks.

My Flo has been like this in the past, she was a rescue too. To overcome the problem try the high value treats and make it as much fun as possible all the way to the park (you'll look daft but it works). Another thing to try is taking her favourite toy and using it as a lure.

Bug loves her walks as long as the weather is warm enough, otherwise she crouches down looking sheepish and tries to run back home! Maybe you could use food as a motivator whilst on walks, food reward based training etc. Maybe she's not used to being walked a lot also?

Re: Does your Staffy like walks
You mention she's bonded with you and that she likes to be able to see you even when in the garden - it sounds to me like she feels safe with you and is reluctant to leave you. I don't suppose you've got a wheelchair you could use until you're back on your feet and able to walk again, do you?
Otherwise, I'd go along with the high value treat/toy ideas, and try not feeding her first. I'd then suggest your husband pops her in the car and takes her somewhere that she's not in the habit of doubling back from, and also somewhere the she doesn't feel home and you are just round the corner from, and instead of taking her for a walk, just play with her, do some little bits of obedience such as sit and down if she knows them so she can have treats, just nice things without asking her to go far from the car. In other words, she can be somewhere with just your husband and it's fine, nice even.
If she does put the breaks on at some point, I'd suggest he walks forwards (have her on a longer line) and puts some food on the ground, so that she only has to walk a few paces forwards to get it. Then he can tell her she's fab and HE decides they turn about. Make it easy for her to go just that little bit further but then reward her with the biggest reward for her at the moment, which is going home.
And above all, make sure he remains happy and fun with her, not frustrated despite how frustrating this is. She needs to want to be with him, regardless of where they are.

Libby and her walks
Oh dear wrote a reply to say thankyou for helpful replies previewed it and lost it, so here goes again.
It is a great comfort to talk to other staffy owners, because want to get it right. She is such a love in so many ways.
It is a bit sad to find she does not enjoy her walks, so will keep on trying , I shall go with them and see how that goes, Libby is in a rush and I will hobble with a stick. It is true she does like me maybe her other owner was a female, but husband will keep on trying he is the main dog walker.
Now I am wondering why she has thrown up her food two nights in a row, will try her on kibble, never given it to my old boy, he seems to have done well, on a mix of tin dog food mixed with dry bisc, and chicken for breakfast, so she has had the same.
I wonder if her being on heat for about three weeks now, has any bearing on this. When the Vet says it is the right time , she will have the op.
Just by the way, Libby is trying her hardest to get Zak interested in her, and of course he cannot be bothered, and is quite grumpy with a warning snap to see her off, having said that, they have got on very well and she respects him, dare say she cannot help herself at the moment.

Re: Does your Staffy like walks
I'd use food as a motivator as well. It could be from being in heat and perhaps still adjusting to a new home and gaining confidence.
