jumping up! I know what to do, but its not working!
Hi, misty will be one in three weeks time and we still have huge jumping up issues. She bounces up and down when we enter a room, even after only being gone for 2 minutes. We ignore her, turn our backs, but now she is bigger it's not so easy. My legs are constantly bruised from a lunging staffy launching herself at me numerous times a day! It's a big problem when out too. She is ok off lead and with other dogs but will run and jump at people when we see them so I have to put her on the lead when we see someone approach. She muddies their clothes! Any tips I can try?

If she lunges constantly i would do some work with her at home both on and off the lead would it be possible to ask some friends round so she gets used to different people when she lunges at the person use a loud firm no! When she eventually gets the. Message give her plenty of praise everyone uses the same technique so she doesnt get mixed messages. use the lead everytime someone visits when she lunges a gentle pull on the lead till all 4 paws on the floor practise this a few times till she gets the message i would do this for 10 minutes a day.

When you ignore, which is correct, do you wait till 4 paws are on the floor and then treat and praise ?... The more you do that the quicker the message will sink in... Hopefully

I still have this problem sometimes, I use a hand gesture to go with 'DOWN' and this has worked when people visit the house, be sure to tell all visitors to do the same in regards to turning their backs or use the same gesture when saying "down".
When out on walks, I had my boy sitting and waiting until people had walked by, using treats, toys or sticks to divert his attention. He will wait now until I tell him to go on.
It does take time and requires consistence and patience like any training, keep it up, it will sink in....one day!

Re: jumping up! I know what to do, but its not working!
I have this problem with Bo. With people he meets frequently, who know how to greet him properly, he rarely if ever jumps up even though he's mega-excited to see them. But with strangers he will, because invariably they waggle their hands at him then stand up and pull their hands away. Of course he follows their hands because he thinks they're playing. I tell them to bend down and rub his shoulders but they ignore me and fanny about with their hands as if they're trying to fish a coin out of a bowl of piranhas. And when we can meet 15 or 20 people on a single walk who each do this to him then it's not surprising he's still jumping up.

Rather than a gesture or vocal command, try walking into the dog. It helps in that it's not a great thing for them and it also means you're controlling their movement. One tip from Patricia McConnell is to ask strangers to pat your dog on the head. Not hard, but still a discernable pat. They think they're being nice but dogs hate being patted on the head. I've not tried that one yet but might need to with Millie at some point, as it's nigh on impossible to stop people wanting to cuddle her with an 'oh, I don't mind'. Yeah, but I do!
Instead of just turning your back, maybe try actually walking away. Make it even clearer that jumping is counter productive. And as Ian says, the key thing is to make sure that al 4 paws are on the floor before you reward.
