hi,
How do you split up your staffy from being attacked from a large or crazy dog. ive read article that says you shout then spray water if that doesnt help then stick a leg in. ive heard crazy stuff like a finger up its butt will make it let go. i also hear a lighter to the nose of the dog that is biting is good but that could make it angrier.

What would you do to stop a fight specially if your dog didnt start it?

My wee staffs been attacked on a few occasions you have to stop before it escalates rather quickly move your dog as far away from other dog as possible. I physically had to grab other dogs collar pull it off mia the key is be quick.

I agree with the above post. Speed is of the essence but you must also consider your own safety. Neither dog will know it has bitten you instead of it's foe so keep hands well away from any teeth. I've heard of the finger/butt thing but have never come across anyone that has attemped it.

I've also heard of throwing a bucket of water over them will do the trick but this is rather hard to come by when walking over the park I guess. The only other thing I would suggest is grabbing each dog by the collar and both owners seperating as soon as they draw breathe.

Yes its speed that is of essence as Ian says. Not long ago Pixee got attacked by another dog for no reason, they were both on lead, the owner also dropped the lead as he was scared Surprised I ended up grabbing that lead to pull his dog away, whilst hubby got hold of Pixee. It was her thick wide collar than saved her, I found 3 holes in it when we got home. I have heard of the bum thing.

take a spare lead, tie it around the other dogs waist nice and tight (i use a chain lead) and pull it to the nearest post, fence or anything strong enough and tie him to it.
then grab your dogs back legs and pull them apart (not roughly just take off the pressure till they let go)
you can tie up your dog at this point and take a breather either call someone to come get the stray dog or its owner and their details)
Another trick is carry a small bottle of apple cider vinegar and if you can get close enough tip into the offending dogs mouth (wont harm him just taste rank) spraying with water does not work...hitting does not work this will just get it more angry towards the thing he has in his mouth and will likely make it shake.
