Stag bars splintering
I've recently picked up one or two very small and very sharp pieces of stag bar off the floor; we're talking a couple of mm. Should I be worried or are these pieces too small to do damage if swallowed?
I'd just take the thing off him and buy something else but no type of chew seems to come without risks...

Re: Stag bars splintering
Hi ya Amy, there have been a few posts about these splinters, they really are sharp and I wouldn't recommend them. Have you tried Antlers. P @ H do them and they do last a while.

Hi Ian, thanks for the reply. I thought stag bars and antlers were the same thing; are they not? If so I'm not sure which one I have!

Re: Stag bars splintering
Ah, stag bars are usually Black. Antlers are normally a little smaller and are Brown with sawn ends. I've never seen one splinter yet and my Flo has three on the go though I do trash them when they get worn down.

Ah okay, I think these are antlers then. I wonder if they splinter quite often but people don't notice since the pieces are so small... This is the first time I've noticed any splintering and we've got through afew.

Re: Stag bars splintering
Have a look at the link below Amy. You may be right and if they are tiny Splinters, I would just remove them to be on the safe side

Re: Stag bars splintering
I thought Stag bars were brown, I have never had any problems with them, and Pixee has been through a few. I do recall some problems somewhere on here with black thingie bars, cant for the life of me think what they are called? Bull something? Would that be what you are thinking as they are the ones that have spilit etc.

Are these the ones you're thinking of? http://www.puredog.co.uk/our-products/bullbar-horn-dog-chews/
It's not these that I've been using, though glad to know I should avoid them because I looked at them as an alternative to what we've got now. To be fair, they do look like they might splinter.

Oh wow, that does look worrying. Thanks for that Mia.
The pieces that were coming off the stag bar certainly weren't like that. They're very small, rather round, but with sharp edges and little points in places.
I should have taken a photo...

Re: Stag bars splintering
May be worth putting the antler in the freezer may reduce risk of bits coming off

Re: Stag bars splintering
We've never had any problems with stag bar/antler they last for ages with no signs of splinters. But I saw the link above about the bull bars & wouldn't risk it for my girl

Re: Stag bars splintering
We've used antlers his whole life and never had problems either He does chew off small pieces but they are usually quite rounded. He does get the odd bit stuck in his teeth which makes him pull some funny faces, but if you look at the texture inside an antler, it is quite porous and spongey looking, so shouldn't splinter much
