nipping - Nipping other dogs heels Empty Nipping other dogs heels

Post by Niffer Tue Mar 24 2015, 10:20

Milo was a right monkey this morning. He was out in the park and saw the usual crowd of dogs with the dog walker who he normally goes over to and has a run round with them all. The lady is fine with it. This morning all the dogs had obviously had their mad 1/2 hours so weren't in the mood to play with Milo. Well he wasn't going to stand for that and started running round one one of the dogs nipping at his back legs to try & make it run. He wasn't hurting them but being a pain in the ass. He just wants to play and play.

How can I nip (pardon the pun) this in the bud ? Should I use the Corrector Spray to distract him do you think or leave him to get nipped back?

I would have used a comment, No! no nipping, and a recall back to you, however generally if all dogs get on, they tend to sort it out themselves. Its if it happened with a dog that he didnt know, then that could cause problems if you allowed it to happen. So to avoid those, I would keep Milo on lead or teach him heel, walk on. See what others have to say too.

If the dogs are familiar with each other it most likely is not a problem. Using a recall command, pet corrector spray , or long line are also options

Little monkey! Reckon a command "enough" perhaps, followed by recall and short burst of training to distract, and then reward by letting him back to play again providing he's settled enough.

Bane has began doing a similar thing with my parents staff when they play. When Domino gets tired and just wants to chill, Bane is there nipping his butt, his chops, his ears, barking in his face, anything trying to get him to chase!

The only thing that stops him is a few second time out by himself. We have to do it a few times but he usually calms down after, so maybe just a few minutes of separation and training would do the trick Smile

Great advice as always many thanks. The dogs were all friendly and the staffy that he was cheeky with didn't give a damn. He had his football in his mouth and wouldn't let it go for anyone. Maybe that's what Milo wanted. I will start to take the corrector spray with me. Hopefully I won't need it but It'll get his attention.

The spray works great for us and we use it fairly often. Sometimes Suki will play a little too rough with a smaller dog, espically around the neck area, and we will use the spray to get her to stop

Thats gr8 - I never used it before in the park just in case she gets scared and runs away from me - she hates the noise, but yesterday the neighbor had a friend round with a hyper noisy dog which set Milo off jumping up the fence and barking back at it. I used a tiny shot of the spray and he ran back to me straight away - very pleased with that.
