Mia 1st collar & lead
We got mia her 1st collar & lead today, in preparation for her 1st outing next week, we just put her the collar on so she can get use to it, all she wants to do is try & get it off, this is normal right because she's not settled with it yet?

Re: Mia 1st collar & lead
absolutely. Gizmo was the saddest, most oppressed and distraught puppy ever for about half a day. Then he went to sleep and completely forgot it was on.
He then did the same with the lead and harness but that took a while longer for him to accept.
Food bribes, as always, soften the blow.

Re: Mia 1st collar & lead
Let mia wear the collar for 15 minutes a day gradually increase the time as always leave the collar off at night .

Re: Mia 1st collar & lead
The reason i say leave the collar off at night is for safety sake collars tend to get caught on bedding for example. It is entirely your own decision

Re: Mia 1st collar & lead
Keep putting it on and taking it off and plenty of distraction when she tries to get it. Same with the lead. And yeah, it's more than normal for them to be interested in it.

Re: Mia 1st collar & lead
Try and distract her with play time so she forgets about it. Id take it off at night for safety reasons too. Personal choice

Re: Mia 1st collar & lead
Once you put it on her, have treats at the ready to distract her. Try doing some training or just getting her attention and have a nice steady flow of treats for all the time she doesn't try to get it off. She will be used to it in no time
Personally, we don't like to leave Bane's collar on when we are not in or when he is sleeping. He only has it on for walks, going out or if we have people over or are in and out of the house.

Re: Mia 1st collar & lead
Very normal behaviour with any new piece of walking gear. I'd also leave the collar off if you are unable to supervise for safety. You may also want to attach the lead and follow her around the house or yard when she walks so she can get used to that as well

Re: Mia 1st collar & lead
Thanks for all your advise and comments, she's getting more use to it as the day has gone on, going to take it off at night while she's still young

Re: Mia 1st collar & lead
3 days on and little Mia still doesn't like her collar, does it take longer for some dogs to get use to collars?

Re: Mia 1st collar & lead
yep, Gizmo hated his for ages. He used to run off whenever he saw it in my hands so I wound up bribing him with food and then sneaking it round his neck when he was distracted.

Re: Mia 1st collar & lead
It'll get easier when it's associated with nice things like treats or walks

Tyson was like that at first too but now he holds it in his mouth cos he knows that he's going out for a walk.
