Tummy problems
Hi,
This is the first time I've had a Staff and I'm a little bit worried about his toileting.
He is 5 months and 3 weeks old and adorable. But the big 'but' is, the amount of times he goes to the toilet each day. He 'poohs' anything from 6 to 10 times a day (3 or 4 times over the night) and they are good size packages. I have never known a puppy (and I've had any, over the years) goes so much. Also, he has alot of gas.
What I need to know is, 'is this normal for a Staff puppy'?

Re: Tummy problems
Hi, Thanks for coming back to me.
At the moment, I feed Benjii with Earls Complete Dry Food and for breakfast he has that and half a can of Pedigree puppy (added to the dry food) and then dry food for the rest of the day.
regards
Trish

Re: Tummy problems
I'd never heard of Earls Complete so I did a search. I couldn't find any ingredient list (a bad sign in itself) but I'm afraid the price told me all I needed to know. These cheap foods are barely worthy of the name 'food', they're just bulking agents and grain and unmentionable meat derivatives. Almost all supermarket foods are like this with a few exceptions (e.g. Tesco's own brand Naturo is supposed to be quite good). When your dog eats it there's so little nutritional value that a similar amount comes out to what goes in.
I couldn't find any info on Benji either, but Pedigree I know is a very poor food.
My advice is to check out this site http://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/
You can enter your daily budget and select foods based on their nutritional value. It also has articles saying what ingredients are not desirable (or you could read the label on a bag of Pedigree ) so you can tailor your search based on your dog's needs.
Off the top of my head some decent brands are Wainwrights, Applaws, James Wellbeloved (I've heard good reports but I don't rate it), Nature's Menu, Nature Diet, Lily's Kitchen, Forthglade, Berriewood, Acana and Platinum.

Re: Tummy problems
Definitely try a different diet.. Very poor ingredients in those foods. We do have a list of recommended foods on the forum, or check the review website noted above. Personally, I would recommend nature diet as a great complete food.

Re: Tummy problems
I would say diet as well. Suki used to go 4-5 times a day until we switched to raw and now she goes once maybe twice a day and much less gas. Here is a list of quality dry foods

Re: Tummy problems
Thankyou all for the information, it does sound like diet to I will rethink it all and introduce it to Benjii slowly.
One more thing though. I've had so many different dogs over the past 40 years and many with digestion problems i.e. Great Dane and the worst was a Borzoi, but I never gave them a raw food diet as I understood it causes many problems. But recently, I have seen so many postings regarding people feeding raw. Are there any problems with giving raw meat?

Re: Tummy problems
I feed mine on 'Fishmongers Finest'...its a cheaper version off 'Fish 4 Dogs' but has more protein. I've had my boy on this from 10 months onwards and its done his skin and fur wonders. Its a fish based diet so contains all them oils! And its a good price!
Good advice from Crystal....be sure to change your pups food gradually and not straight away!
