Meal times Empty Meal times

Post by AussieStaff Wed Feb 25 2015, 02:10

Koda is 16 mths now and has never been much of an eater, we mostly need to lure him outside to eat morning/night. He is on top notch kibble mixed with tuna and snacks in between (ie stuffed Kong, bite size pieces of steak as a treat/reward etc.). I recently changed the tuna brand and now he is more likely to eat it rather than not. Our Vet said he is a good heathly weight (19KG) and isn't concerned, said it's quite normal for them to only want 1 decent meal every 2-3 days. I have never owned a Staffy before and every other dog I know woofs their meal(s) down immediately - I often bring Koda's back inside and re-serve it if he hasn't eaten it in the meal prior. The other thing is he doesn't come and get food when you 1st put it there (despite trying to lure him to his bowl), he'll have a look at it maybe a sniff and often walks off then minutes later is at his bowl having a wee feed. He's happy & healthy so I'm not worried as such, I just wondered if anyone else has this 'problem' ? Strange dog this one !! Laughing

Suki is the opposite, she comes running anytime we open the fridge. She will also remind us if we are a little late in feeding her

Shearas the same...he has two feeds a day. It's rare he will eat the whole meal unless hes been for a big walk beforehand. His breakfast lasts all day until tea time, he just picks at it as and when he wants. He gets his treat during the day as well so he doesn't go without.

He also knows when the fridge is open and when the cheese is out Laughing

Funny how different they are. Bo is only small but has an unbelievable appetite and is constantly hungry. He's a very healthy size and weight, although small in stature, but boy can he eat! He's eating 9% of his bodyweight per day in wet food, which is twice recommended, and given the chance he'd eat twice that, probably more. Even with his slow-eater bowl he'll hoover up a full tray of Wainwrights or Berriewood in 30 seconds and lick the bowl so clean it's like it's newly washed.

I once fed him twice in five minutes by accident (I was half asleep) and he ate the second bowl just as fast as the first, and still wanted more.

Ive always encouraged Yoda to eat when he feels the need to do so. Other than when he was a pup I only feed him once a day but maybe leave some dry food for him to much if he wants. I tried to promote that food would always be there as needed & so he didnt need to go eat it all while he could etc. Of course he gets fed heaps from us during the day as he seems to get every second bite of anything we eat. Im sure he could & would eat all day at times the way he carries on you would think he was starving. Since hes been full grown Ive only given him about 75% of what the food recommends as thats all he has ever seemed to need. The vet hs never said hes under weight etc & he has always looked fit & healthy at 27kg. I can see how some dogs get alot bigger however as if I wanted to I could feed Yoda heaps more & make him work & build more muscle etc like Ive seen some staffies. Yoda has rear leg issues so I try keep his weight down if anything.

We've never had a problem with Bane not eating but he can be a fussy sod at times! We got a new mat for him to eat his food off as he makes a mess and the first few days were a nightmare! He would run up to his food, see the mat and then sit and whine at us as if to say "I'm not eating it off that" Laughing He's also pretty picky with scraps and refuses treats from most people while out and about!

My parent's staff on the other hand...if there is any food about he is there. If you are eating he has his dribbling face and 1 paw on your lap waiting for a bit Laughing If you put most things near his mouth it's gone without a thought!

Ok Koda does this too, sits there perfectly still right at my feet as I chop things up and hopes it will fall in his direction (I can never resist lol) Laughing

Gosh I'm not sure, I don't have scales at home to weigh his food but he's 19KG and he gets a cup of kibble twice a day & small tin of tuna mixed in evening meal + snacks/treats etc. - which are minimal during the week as we are at work and I won't give him treats until after his dinner.

Koda is similar in terms of being given less than the recommended serve size, and he's a 'normal' weight for 16mths the Vet(s) said so I trust that's all ok. Haha 'every second bite of anything we eat' - sounds familiar, well for trying anyway !! Laughing

We still weigh Theias food. She's on 130g twice per day and hasn't left a kibble yet. You might be putting too much down for him.
