Walking and peeing
Teddy loves going on his walks but won't pee or poop whilst he is out. He never has done and waits till he gets home and does it in the back garden. How can I encourage him to go on walks? Is it normal? He is almost 6 months old.

Re: Walking and peeing
Dogs are weird, they make up their own rules. Walk him long enough and he'll go, then he'll probably remember that he went and it worked out all right and do it again next time.
Bo used to always go poo in the yard. Then one day he decided that on no account would he poo in the yard even if he was positively busting and he had to be at least 100 yards from the house before he went. Sometimes he'll run at top speed on his long lead with his ears back to get to the Minimum Pooing Distance then it's Ahhhh - I needed that!
I don't know where he gets his ideas from.

Ah bless him! It's very common. Is he ever off lead when he is out? Sometimes it's the lead that stops it!

Re: Walking and peeing
Alfie was like this for the first few months i had him, it was baffling me. He never used to sniff corners or lamposts either, thought he was a bit odd. He's nearly 9 months now and he pee's so much when we are walking that by the end of the walk, he cocks his leg to pee but he's empty lol. He also likes to poo in exactly the same place as well.

Re: Walking and peeing
Thanks all, hopefully he will get the hang of it soon. He does he on long walks but will just hold himself in the whole time!! I think it could be the lead thar stops him, only let him off a couple of times because I'm scared haha but maybe need to be brave and let him be. Thank you

You could try a puppy "long line" he will still have the freedom then, but you don't need to worry about him running off!

Re: Walking and peeing
I would recommend the long led as well...that way they can go and do their own thing but you still have control. My boy wont go for pee or poop if hes on the lead...he gets embarrassed bless him so he waits till hes off then runs miles away to find real long grass so he can hide himself. It also took him until he was about 1 to realise that peeing on a lamppost isn't so bad after all. Just be sure to give plenty of praise if/when he does go outside so he knows its the right thing to do.
