Peeing in excitement. Empty Peeing in excitement.

Post by burties35 Mon Feb 21 2011, 15:11

Thought I had seen a post on this but if I did can't find it.

My Uncle has a 4 month old Staffie, Bella who is very very exciteable to the extent that she wee wees up everyone, he has tried getting people to ignore her etc but she still ends up weeing on them. I had the pleasure of being covered last night although I hadn't fussed made eye contact or anything. It really shocked me just how much more boisterous she was and I do think it has started to get my Uncle down a bit. She is a lovely looking dog but has no manners I have passed advice on for nipping etc but she still does this too you can't even stroke her without her trying to get ya. Any advice would be appreciated and I will pass it on have told him to come on here will give him another reminder. xx

Hi Louise
Bella is only 4 months old so everything is exciting for her at the moment and things like meeting people is even more exciting. This will get better as she gets older. The way to tackle this problem is to do what you have suggested. Anyone that enters the house makes no eye contact or touches Bella untill she is completly calm. This will be when she is lying down and no longer looking at you. Then just pat the dog to show that calmness get the attension.
It is vital not to shout at Bella when she wee's as she probably doesn't even know she's doing it. Ignore the wee and clean it later once she's calmed down.
Another reason people believe dogs wee with excitement is because the dog has low confidence, this can be fixed with obedience training, but I don't think this is the case with Bella

I never thought weeing was due to excitement it was due to submission and nervousness most do grow out of this but encourage the visiters to ignore the dog and let the dog aproach them but no eye contact I no it sounds not very nice but neither is a dog that looses its dignity and is fearful.

A dog can wee itself through being submissive, nervous, scared and through excitement. Normally excitement effects puppies. There normally to busy wagging their tails and jumping up in excitement to realise they have done anything

Mouse does this ALL the time to every person (21 weeks old), to the point that one trip to town she was saying hello to a lady and peed up her shoe up her leg right up to her knee, as embarasing as it was the lady understood that she was a puppy and just excitement, But no Mouse pees on every single person that says hello to her, or even just is about..if your near enough she pees. She dosnt realise shes doing it.

The thing is, not to get frustrated, 99% of dogs grow out of it.
