do they get on with other dogs
hiya every one, just a quick question really, we have a 19 mth old what i think is a full staffie bitch her name is ROO, now is it true that they are not really that keen on other dogs, we dont have another dog we have a cat and shes brill with him and exellent with our 8 year old son, but we have found when we walk her and she sees other dogs she gets very strong and plays up and creates a fuss, she has sniffed another dog while we have had her and she was ok with it , it seems to be the smaller breeds she makes the biggest fuss over, we havent let her off her lead yet because we dont want her to run off as her old home isnt that far from us ,but she will be going off her lead in the next month or so and at the mo is on a full training lead that is about the length of a horses lunge line, so really i am wanting to know is there a chance she could bite another dog out on a walk or is she just wanting to be curiouse thanks

Re: do they get on with other dogs
There is always a chance any dog can snap be it not yours. Personally my girl is fine with other dogs, although I socialise her all the time.
Where I work another customer brought in a puppy Bulldog and I must say that was the first dog she opposed too, I think purely because it could run underneath her which she didn't like and I needed to seperate them. Apart from that I've been lucky.
Now my first I really did have to watch, she would snap at anything, and it took again a lot of socialising to correct this, but your doing the right thing by keeping Roo on a training lead, make sure you have her recall down to a t, (or as much as you can with a staff) and just try to socialise Roo plenty..
They all have different characters and if you are worried then I would say keep her on lead, I know lots of people who don't let there dogs off (not only staffies) because of this problem.
Do you have any training classes near, not so much for the training but so Roo can be around other dogs and you can see how she reacts?? Otherwise any friends that you can walk her with, away from her old home??
In my opinion they do mix nicely in the right enviroment.
Let me know how you get on x

Re: do they get on with other dogs
Bandit wasn't overly friendly with other dogs. As long as the other dog was friendly and at least partially submissive he was fine. Any growl or stiff-legged walking, or especially humping would start him off.
We did try socialising him & to an extent it worked (we'd socialised him as a pup, but when he was about 7 or 8 months old a dog attacked him & he never really forgot it), but after a while we just accepted that there were some dogs he wasn't gonna like! We could read his body language like a book, though, so it was easy to avoid confrontations.
For a while my sister in law looked after him during the day when we were at work and he happily got on with her large collie cross.

thanks for that advice its most helpful and its good to know that walking her on the training lead is a good idea yes we have started walking her away from the direction of her old home because she was a handful and seemed to have been to all the places we were taking her before, we are a little bit worried so will keep her on her lead until we are 1000% sure she will be ok with other dogs, socialising her with other dogs sounds a great idea, and we know the perfect place to try it at short periods of time
