Prices for RAW!
Hi
Now that I finally have Cooper eating raw (big thanks to Emma & Bane for all the advice) I decided to look at the price difference between what I am feeding him now (Natures Menu) and DAF (which is literally 3 miles up the road from me) and can't believe how much cheaper DAF is!!
I will be placing an order on their website to collect very shortly. As he has just started raw food again I'm just sticking to the chicken mince for a while just to be on the safe side.
I will be getting the packs of 454g chicken mince to start with so can I ask everyone how much they normally feed in grams per day. I normally feed Cooper twice a day, breakfast and evening so would he get 1 pack morning and one pack night or is that to much?
He was weighed at 17kg last week at the vets.
Thanks in advance everyone.
Paul

Hey Paul, lucky you living so close to DAF
As for the portion size, it is recommended to feed between 2-3% of their body weight per day. So in your case between 340g and 510g. This is just a guideline and obviously it differs per dog.
I would say a pack of 454g per day would be a good starting point for you. Either feed one meal or split into two. And then just watch his weight over the first week or so. If you notice him getting skinny, up the weight per day, if he gets a bit podge reduce it. Simple as
Once he has been on the mince for a couple of days, maybe try introducing some bigger bone such as wings or legs so he gets some good teeth cleaning food in there

Re: Prices for RAW!
Thanks Emma.
As well as Cooper being super healthy on the raw diet, it's going to save me a fortune!!
Do I just put the wings or legs in his bowl with the mince?

Re: Prices for RAW!
Ledger is 20kg and has one of the DAF mince packs split over two meals a day I find that allows for training treats or for the odd larger portion I.e. The chicken mince stuffed hooves (some of today's delivery are huge!) these are great left in a cool bag for the dog walker to give him when her visits cover meal timesĀ
Tbh wings I just tend to give frozen he only takes them somewhere safe to eat if I put them in the bowl anyway we tend to have the duck wings as a bit bigger but still munched before they get messy, bigger bones he has on an old towel or in the summer out in the yard

Re: Prices for RAW!
Yeah just add it in, they take longer to eat if frozen too!
Just keep an eye on him the first few he has to make sure he properly chews the bones down. If you see him trying to swallow them without chewing enough, just hold the other end so he gets the idea of chewing
Compared to some dog foods it is a lot cheaper! I think Bane is about 25kg and he is having roughly 700g per day so it works out a bit more expensive for us...but still on par with the price of biscuits we were feeding originally! And it's all meat with no fillers!
