chocolate advise!!
Just noticed Millie behind the sofa licking....I pulled the chair out only to see a choc orange segment disappear!! I know chocolate is a real no no and believe me ill be having words with the person that lost that bit. How bad is one piece going to be and is there anything I can do to neutralise the affects?

Re: chocolate advise!!
I have first hand experience of this Amanda. Hopefully it was milk & not dark choc as dark is worse. If it's one segment then keep an eye on Millie for any signs of being unwell. If she looks dizzy or unsteady on her feet call a vet as soon as possible.
There is virtually nothing you can do except treat any symptoms arising from having eaten it. With Flo (who had eaten a large amount of dark choc) she was given drugs to slow her heart rate which was racing and keep her hydrated. She was in Dog hospital overnight but made a full recovery.

Re: chocolate advise!!
I think it varies from dog to dog as well, Amanda. You hear of loads of dogs who have had it even regularly because their owners were unaware of the potential problems, and have never had a problem. You hear of others that react straight away. As Ian says, monitor and hope she's fine. Fingers crossed here.

Re: chocolate advise!!
Just watch her . Most dogs won't have extreme reaction to that amount of milk chocolate but can be lethal for some.

Re: chocolate advise!!
Dont worry that tiny bit wont make a jot of difference. its quite a large ammount of chocholate (especially milk) before you have to worry. pretty much the same with the rest of the not nice to eat list. was discusted earlier this year when a vet pumped out a dogs stomach becuase it ate a hot cross bun.... as a one off a few currents dont cause anything so they subjected the poor dog to much worse than if they left it be to poo out the currents. cash cash cah and scare mongering. they know you love your dog and would pay your left kidney to make sure it was okay..

Re: chocolate advise!!
I overheard a vet once say that even a box of chocolate fingers wont harm a dog but i guess every dog is different and reacts to it in their own way. Keep a close eye and call the vet if you notice strange behaviour; sickness, dizyness etc.

Re: chocolate advise!!
Glad to hear that!
A small amount doesn't usually affect a dog although I wouldn't chose to
give them chocolate. But we all know just how quick they can be when
they find something

As a newbie I just wanted to be sure. I kinda thought it would require more to cause massive problems....I was just trying to prepare from possible projectile horrors!

Yeh, Nita went through half an Xmas cake she nabbed from the counter top and didn't have any problems. I think its breed specific but still a good idea to keep them all away from the bad stuff

Its more to do with body mass, the main danger with choc is theobromine which varies by quite a large ammount dependant on the type of choc they have eaten. After all the bin raids my little gits go on my two should be in permanent intensive care according to some vets. the dog I was talking about was a schnauzer who was in the same puppy class as marley. i just cant believe they pumped his stomach while he was suffering no ill effects.
If anyone is intrested this ties in well with the research I have done http://www.petmd.com/dog/chocolate-toxicity
