Lola ate chocolate!!
Hey guys..
Wanted to ask for a little advice as concerned.
Lola got her paws on some chocolate... my fault as I never put it away... tbh didnt think as it was un opened, boxed & wrapped.
However I think shes lucky to be alive but I can only find 1 empty foil leaving 15 foil wrappers missing.
I assume she has eaten them too... will it harm her? this would have happened christmas day I have just noticed now & she seems absolutley fine in herself.
Hope you can help

Re: Lola ate chocolate!!
I know chocolate is supposed to be bad for dogs (fortunately, Kuchar being a weirdo doesn't like it at all) but if it helps, my Godmother's Boxer ate a whole box of chocolates, wrappers box and all, and lived many a long day afterwards.

Re: Lola ate chocolate!!
the foil should pass thru, it just might need a "helping hand" at the end of its journey (yes, its as bad as it sounds. block of cheese with plastic wrap and a large pooing weim. not my proudest moment on a walk...)

Re: Lola ate chocolate!!
I think she will be ok ... Just found out, panicked & wanted to ask before vet trip in the morning
you guys are right... just had a nibble on the wrapper to its not thick foil. Im sure it will be dissolved in her stomach acid but will inspect any 'packages'
Maybe let the OH do that. it was his chocolate

Re: Lola ate chocolate!!
The wrappers would probably have been shredded into tiny bits and not cause harm.
We're two days on now from Lola's great crime - if her poo was suddenly a lot darker (and more fragrant?) then the chocolate would have passed through her by now. and probably the little bits of shredded foil.
However I understand your concern so obviously keep an eye on her - if she starts to show tummy-achy signs, trying to poo but can't etc then a trip to the vet would be advisable - at least you would know what was causing it.
My guess is that she will be OK - she's an adult and dogs eat heaps of rubbish we'd rather not know about.
Do let us know how she gets on

Re: Lola ate chocolate!!
I'm sure they need to eat a great amount like 250 grams to be dangerous. If the dog is ok now then assume that no harm will come from it.

Re: Lola ate chocolate!!
I doubt there's any harm done - as Steve says, it would have shown up before now.
Do remember, though, that although all chocolate can be dangerous to dogs, dark chocolate & high quality chocolate are by far the worst as they have more theobromine....

Re: Lola ate chocolate!!
oops naughty Lola lol.
As Steve and Caryll said i'm sure she's fine. My Zaccy ate loads in his life time chocolate being one of his favourite things lol. With a young son around who was always feeding zaccy stuff I spent a lot of time on the phone to the vets lol.
Glad she is ok though it's always a worry when you first discover what they've done
xXx

Re: Lola ate chocolate!!
Dark chocolate can be more harmful has it has a higher cocoa content that milk chocolate. Chocolate also contains caffeine, so a dog may be a little more hyper than usual if any is consumed. The symptoms vary with each dog, along with the amount which would cause a reaction.
The wrappers will work their way out naturally.

Re: Lola ate chocolate!!
A general rule is that dark chocolate is more dangerous to dogs, it has higher levels of theobromine which is the part thats poisonous although I would still say it would take a fair amount to do much damage although it is still advisable try to avoid letting dogs eat it (although i know its not always possible!)
Dogs might be sick anyway if they've eaten alot because its quite rich but generally look out for symptoms like tender/sore abdomen, vomiting, retching, straining, d+ and the obvious 'stomach bug' kind of signs
glad to see she was all okay in the end though!

Re: Lola ate chocolate!!
Glad to hear she's ok. My last dog, a GSD, stole and ate a whole box of after dinner mints some years back and was fine.
My main concern now that she is ok would be......... quality chocolate is more dangerous to dogs therefore, who gave you the cheapo chocs?? and make a note to give them a cheap pressie next year.

Re: Lola ate chocolate!!
Glad to hear Lola is ok - you were lucky! A few weeks ago Edie managed to claw from under the sofa a 1kg bar of dairy milk that I had hidden from the kids and ate about 3/4 of it! Luckily I had only goen to the dentist so was home quite soon after the deed but she was in a terrible state - panting and whining and looked like she had been inflated with a tyre pump - £90 at the vets later and even after a light lunch of charcoal solution she was still looking sorry for herself Gave me a shock as my last dog stole and consumed chocolate regularly with no ill effects - mind you - as the vet said - I'd be feeling pretty ill after nearly a bloody kilo of the stuff - and she's only 20kg herself! Made a note to myself to consume all chocolate on the day of purchase to avoid future accidents and vets bills!
