Getting another Staffy, hopefully
As I have now been well and truly bitten (not literally) by Staffies, I'm considering getting another rescue. Seen a gorgeous old guy of about 8 thats keeps getting missed by folk. Had a great chat on the phone with two lovely ladies (one who has 8 of em) about staffys and going to see him this week.
Hopefully he will get on well with Nita and I can get another staffy out of the kennels.
Anyone got any tips that they encountered when getting another?
PS I've just realised. I typed this sat on the floor while Nita is on the sofa snoring into my right ear. lol

Oh good luck Al. First meeting should really be on neutral ground and obviously on lead but other than that take it nice and gently with a stroll together and see how they go.

Oh yes, one was as hyper as a tazmanian devil and the other while quiet at first barked like crazy at her.
I'm hoping its not jealousy lol

Re: Getting another Staffy, hopefully
Hiya! When rehoming another (or fostering) I think it's best to decipher each dogs personality traits/likes and dislikes/play style/any behavioural problems etc as it can be quite a tricky business. For example, if I were to rehome another it would be a male, over 3 years (bug is pretty chilled and likes puppies but not sure whether she would like living with one), and a dog that is confident and settled as Bug is quite insecure and worried. I wouldn't take in a dog that is overly boisterous, but a dog that likes to play as Biscuit is a very flirty, playful girl, but gets worried by pushy dogs. Lots to think about. Fostering is also useful to begin with the ensure that the two dogs get on in a home environment too, as this can change things. Or a two week trial at least, so that there isn't so much guilt or commitment if it doesn't work out.

Re: Getting another Staffy, hopefully
Thanks for the tips, Rachel. Nita is very chilled at home, she has her 5 minutes of running around after a walk, has her food then she just plonks down and rests most of the day. We have a couple of play times but she just likes to relax looking out of the window.
Hence why I think an older dog would prefer the quietness. She only gets boisterous sometimes if playing with another dog in the park but from what I learnt, the male dog just likes to potter about on walks so she will be off playing. I will ask about a trial though as that sounds like a good idea. I have two weeks off work still so ideal to see how they get on in a home environment.

My only advise would be if you can take Nita to the rescue centre to meet up with any possible other dogs before you bring them home, this way rescue centre staff are on hand to help with any issues either dog may have with the other in a controlled environment.

I dont mind, Ian as long as they get along. Thanks Rachel, setting off soon.
Re: Getting another Staffy, hopefully
Well, we had a lovely drive out and was my met by a lovely lady who introduced us to the staffy, Jasper. He was sat on a sofa and could just see his head pop up over the sofa arm.
Lovely guy (he is about 9) and Nita and him got on well, in fact they sniffed each other and just carried on with what they were doing. It was round about this point that Nita spotted some hens and after a few seconds staring at them toddled over to say hello. Needless to say, the hens were off so Nita followed and got called straight back.
The women we met introduced us to some other staffies too. One was blind, bless him. Two girls which Nita didn't get on with and another big guy called Vinnie who was around the same age as Jasper who was a right soft old lad.
And then the hens came back......so Nita decided to go after them again, prey drive kicked in and despite running after her she decided to catch one and bring it back. Thankfully she only got it round its tail feathers but profuse apologies made and we carried on chatting.
So Jasper, hopefully, will be coming over for a trial once house checks are complete. Fostered for a week.

Re: Getting another Staffy, hopefully
Ha, she sure was Ian.
Had a phone call today about the fostering, as I am having him for the week as a trial, they did a vet reference and we are going to pick him up this Sunday.
Checked pet insurance to see if he can be added. He can be (if all goes well). 400% more than I am paying though but it works out at a night out so money well spent.

Yeh, insurance is a bit steep but the old guy was found as astray so he deserves a good home. Fingers crossed it all works out. Pics will be here Sunday all being well
Re: Getting another Staffy, hopefully
I think a trial fostering is an excellent idea. I foster dogs and Rupert has taken to them - they have both been girls so far.
I am excited to know what happens.
Do you know history? Is he at a rescue centre?
