Lead walking is becoming a night mare :(
Hi guys, so Harley pulling is getting out of hand now me and my partner have argued over different methods of trying to teach him and its becoming to much, and I do not want him to see us all wound up as this will transfer to him. He is so strong and has injured my thumb from lunging and my shoulder is becoming very sore. He is very obedient for a pup in other areas such as sitting at curb sides and coming when hes called etc.. but his lead walking is terrible.
We take him for a 20 min run around every morning on the field mostly on extendable lead or off lead with his ball and hes perfect the problem starts when we put his other lead on and we walk him through the streets for 10 mins when he pulls.
In the night he gets 25-30 min walk on lead and he walks like a dream literally like a different dog all we have to do is gentle tug on his lead and say heel and he does just wont do it in the day for some reason I was thinking maybe its because hes wound up from playing in the field and maybe i should walk him on lead first then go to the field for a play ? I am really confused help would be very much appreciated thanks.

Re: Lead walking is becoming a night mare :(
why the rush to get home after playing ...does he get fed then or a treat maybe?
try stopping EVERY time he pulls ...sooner or later hell work out that hell get there quicker if he walks to heal
hope this helps

Hey Cath thanks for the response I will try stopping every time he pulls see if that helps, he's being a testy little pup at the moment and just walked absolutely perfect for me so I know he can do it just a bit frustrating but I will stick with it. Just seen your from Swansea were from Bridgend but got Harley from a breeders In swansea x

I use a figure of 8 gentle leader, bloody godsend! Vin would have pulled my arm out of socket if I hadnt got this. He now doesnt pull on any lead I always have taught to heal aswell though with a treat in hand, so far then used to make sit and beg for his treat. In fact I still do this now on our morning lead walk and Vin is now over 3 years of age

Thank you so much undautri and Inez for the advice I will try this. I can report that today his pulling was a lot less maybe it was because I was calmer a few people have made me chuckle by saying "hes doing a fine job taking you for a walk isn't he" lol anything with a face he is off just loves people bless him

Strange that he only does it during the day though. My Flo used to pull on lead but something just clicked with her and now walks nicely. I did find that a loose lead seemed to work, it could be that my Flo felt tension through the lead.

Debz I had a sporn no pull harness and they are by far the best I've tried on Harley. The other harnesses rubbed him under the arms but the sporn is very comfy with padded material under the arms the small size would fit your little one probably. beth

I think that's what exactly it is Ian. The morning walk is always a bit rushed before work and maybe he can sense it so today I went extra early gave him slacker lead and he did great with a pocket full of treats
