Poisonous foods Empty Poisonous foods

Post by bobs Sun Dec 28 2014, 20:54

Hi we have not been on here for a while, hope every one had a good Xmas.
I had a book from Asda called Biscuits for your dogs as a present, but on reading the ingredients there were some that I was not happy or sure about.
Several recipes contain Carob, Garlic and Apricots which I thought should not be given to dogs.
Can anyone confirm whether my suspicions are correct or not.
 Thank you

Poisonous foods Empty Re: Poisonous foods

Post by -Ian- Mon Dec 29 2014, 19:01

I've just had a quick search of poisonous foods for dogs and there seems to be some conflicting advice about Garlic. In small amounts it is suggested as ok... Personally I wouldn't chance it at all.

Again, Apricots are suggested as ok as long as dogs only eat the fruit and no other part and in small amounts. This is another I just wouldn't chance.

Poisonous foods Empty Re: Poisonous foods

From reading through the list nothing stands out to me from what I have previously read. I think many of the ingredients are fine in small quantities so putting them into a few treats will be fine.

As for garlic, it has a lot of health benefits for them, again as long as you don't go mad with it. Bane has 1 or 2 cloves a week mixed in with his food, and I add a few cloves to the liver cake I make him.

There was a post on here with the most poisonous foods to stay well away from. If I remember correctly it included:
- Raisins/Grapes
- Chocolate
- Alcohol
- Mushrooms
- Xylitol (in sweets and gum)
- Avocados (and the pits/pips of most fruits)
- Onions
- Caffeine
- Yeast Dough

If you are not sure and the recipe doesn't have much in just leave it out? Smile

Nita nicked half an Xmas cake off the worktop Xmas Eve and had no reaction to the raisins at all. I sometimes wonder if its certain breeds of dogs rather than the full range.

Needless to say we didnt have Xmas Cake on Xmas day

I think with most things, it is in high quantities that it causes a problem.
