reputation with other dogs??
Hi
I'm new to this forum. I've had dogs all my life but not a staffy.
I have been moved by the plight of the staffy alot of them end up in rescue through no fault of their own. All rescues local to me have several in and I am interested in possibly adopting a small older staffie (5yrs+) in 2015.
In most breed descriptions it mentions although they are very people friendly they are often dog aggressive. I have a 2 yr old male Border Collie too (neutered) and was wondering how accurate these are?
Would an older dog (male or female) be less likely to be dog aggressive? or is it just talking about young entire males entering adolescence? (which can be true for several breeds).
My young collie is very friendly and grew up with an older female so hoping to find a sweet gentle staffy that would be happy with a human and K9 companion.
Thanks
Kate

Re: reputation with other dogs??
all depends how the dog is treated as a pup and how well socialised they are each and every staffy is unique in their own way. ideally introduce the dog to the dog you currently own. Your own dog may not be happy with having another dog in the house although usually they get on with dogs outside the home. From the rescue centre get as much background information as possible about the dog you intend to adopt whether they have been socialised with other dogs lead training etc. a staffy will become your best friend. they are very much people dogs who crave human contact.

hia from me and sasha a lot of rescues will let you take your dog there so they can see how the 2 dogs will get on and walk them together also, you might want to think about a female, lots of staffies get on fine with other dogs just depends on what experiances they have had

Re: reputation with other dogs??
Thanks, as I said he's grown up with an older female from 8 weeks old so has never been an only dog. She is still here but her back end is going as well as going blind so this will be our last xmas together sadly (she's 13 and half).
However I wouldn't be looking until after 2015 by which time there will just be myself and my collie. I use a mobility scooter and he runs alongside. I have a dog bike trailer for my old girl which could be also be used by an older staffy if needed for longer treks or she could ride on the footplate if she got tired.. which is what my collie did as a puppy and my older dog (before her hips got bad).

Hiya from me and Vinnie, well done to you for looking at rescuing, perhaps an older Female would be better as you already have a male

Re: reputation with other dogs??
All great advice above. Thank you for thinking about taking on an older Staff. The older ones are certainly more mellow so would think that if you socialised before taking one straight home then you'll see how they get on and will be fine

Re: reputation with other dogs??
yes he grew up with a female dog who actually was a bit grumpy when he first came and would jump on him! They're friends now but she doesn't have much longer sadly.
A local rescue has several staffies and I've been asked before when I was considering whether I could be a foster parent or adopt another whether I would consider a staffy.
We do know someone in the village who has a tiny little staffy that is really sweet and he also has two spaniels. we got talking once. He always kept his staffy on the lead, not because she was unfriendly, she was as soft and daft as the spaniels he said but cos of other people's fears, even though she's a really small staffy.
I'd asked about as I was thinking of downsizing, as I've struggled with my eldest's care now her back end is going (she's 20kg and 23" all a lab x collie) and I'm not getting any younger!
My collie is around same height and slightly lighter (around 17.5-18kg) so said if I took on another it would have to be smaller than him...though I wouldn't want a very tiny fragile toy breed as my collie is a little clumsy when playing football, he's so focused on the ball he doesn't always watch where he's going..I can just imagine lots of broken legs with something as tiny as a chihuahua.lol!
We sometimes see another person in a neighbouring village with a small male staffy and him and my collie play really well together, which was what got me thinking about staffies. When I first got talking to the person they were quite sad as they had also rescued their staffy and then found cos of the media no-one would let their dogs play with him in case it locked his jaws round their dogs head or something! He's a bigger staffy and black so I guess I can see why most people think he's scary but he's also a big softie. Though actually I love black dogs so both mine are mostly black.
I can understand their point though when we're constantly seeing stuff in the media about staffies fighting or with injuries from fighting but the ones I've actually come into contact with have all been lovely big softies!

Re: reputation with other dogs??
Hi and welcome to the forum from me and the zoo xx
I think it all depends on whether or not the dog has been socialized. Luckily for me Knox seems love other dogs as long as they don't pester him too much (but even then he just takes himself away).
I would say that once you've found a lovely new staffy to adopt I would take your other dog to the shelter to have play dates and see how they get on xx

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me
Maybe you could contact the rescue centre where the dog is you would like to adopt and ask if you can take your collie in there to meet the new dog. New family addition such as these are best done on neutral ground plus you will have the benefit of the rescue centre experienced staff on hand to help deal with any issues that may arrise during the meeting.
