introducing younger dog to elderly staffy
I have Zak , he is 14years old staffy and in good health, except that he is a bit stiff and cannot walk too far.
I have the chance to adopt a a staffy from a rescue she came in with her puppies and when they are weaned she will be looking for a new home. Would be glad to hear from anyone if you think this would work. I know they will have to be introduces very carefully, but wonder about jealousy from my boy especially if husband took new dog out because she could go on longer walks, I would always stay with Zak. Help please.

Re: introducing younger dog to elderly staffy
Jealousy could indeed be an issue so try not to fuss over the pup and neglect the current dog. An article of clothing with the puppies scent on it could help with the transition

Its entirely up to you, id watch because he may get jealous and grouching he is 14 after all, I would go and see her see how she is how she acts, and if you would still like to adopt her then do so veey carefully because is she isnt to keen and neither is he he is 14, hope things go well!

Re: introducing younger dog to elderly staffy
So it's the Mum not a puppy ?
If the Mum is a calm dog then meeting on neutral ground a few times to see how they react might give you an idea. You might also have to feed separately etc but if they rub along ok then I would give it a go. It's only really something you can second guess as you know your older Staff's temperament.
Wishing you luck

Re: introducing younger dog to elderly staffy
Thank you, I guess it is a case of go slowly, I would never want to upset my boy, who knows they could like each other, he likes to meet his old pals
when we are out walking. I will let you know how it goes, we are going to see the new mum on Wednesday, wonder if it will be love at first sight for me.

Re: introducing younger dog to elderly staffy
Im sure it can work, Ive seen my dogs adapt to older dogs. marley is a right cock sure little git and postures everything but when it comes to older dogs you can see the respect he gives and its the only dog he will either ignore or submit too. he is hyper 99.9% of the time yet we meet an old brown lab on our walks every now and again and he will lay down and let it sniff him and walk on. its amazing to see, total submission and the older dog hasnt even done anything other than walk up to him

Re: introducing younger dog to elderly staffy
Thanks for reassuring advice. I can't wait for Wednesday, Mum was found in central London, tied to a lamp post and pups in a shopping basket, so who knows what trauma she has gone through, but thankfully looked after now. I'll let you know how it goes

Re: introducing younger dog to elderly staffy
As others have said, depends on temperament/activity level more than anything. My girl is 7 going on 17, really chilled in the house and a bit lazy, she doesn't like young hyper young dogs in the house, but a friend has a 13 year old who loves young pups. Just see how they go, but don't make your older dog uncomfortable for the sake of rescuing another.

Re: introducing younger dog to elderly staffy
im having the same problem with 6 week old nico with 2 year old cleo but I can understand your situation is a little different with having older dogs but it probably is just a jealousy thing but they will come around eventually im sure just keep them together as much as you can whilst being supervised incase anything turns nasty.
best of luck with it

Re: introducing younger dog to elderly staffy
Thank you for all of your helpful replies.
We have had Libby our rescue Staffy for 7weeks now.
She is lovely and has settled in very well.
She and Zak understand each other. Libby would like to play with the old boy and does try, but a warning snap from him and she seems to get the message.
She has a few bad habits we are working on, but whoever had her in her previous life, loved her and certainly trained her very well, she is full of confidence, biddable, and wants to please.
Love her to pieces, when I know how will put a picture on she is white with a brindle patch over one eye, and the sweetest little face .
This is a great site have learnt a lot.
