Mouthing / biting
Hello Everyone,
It's Skye's 2nd week with us and she is doing great.
The one thing we are having issue with is excessive mouthing and biting, I understand that this is how she would of played with her litter mates but when in play mode, even if we keep telling her no and giving her a toy to chew she is still going back for our hands, clothes etc sometimes. I have tried making a yelping sound which I think is having the best response she bites less and less hard when I do this but doesn't always stop completely. How long typically does it take for this sort of behaviour to subside in a puppy it doesn't bother me too much but our 5 year old is becoming more stand offish from her?

Re: Mouthing / biting
They do tend to stop as they get older, try lots of exercise and maybe a chew stick? They helped with my puppy when she started chewing the house up haha tired her jaw out

Thanks, she has been particularly good round the house anything she has gone for she has stopped with a sharp no. Got her a kong today, will just keep trying to be consistent with her.

That's the best approach, consistency. It's hard when they are young but you will get there

Re: Mouthing / biting
Yes Nylabones (and other similar products) have been our saviour. Our girl is 8 months now and she still loves hers and the only thing we can redirect her chewing to when she is in that mood (yes at 8 months she hasn't grown out of it yet). She doesn't go for household items anymore, the sharp no or 'ahh ahh' worked for us as a young pup but now that she knows 'leave it' we use that to be consistent. With the biting of your hands, I would recommend teaching her bite inhibition with a word like 'softly' 'delicate' 'gentle' etc. as much as you don't want her to go for your hands, it's as important she knows your limits as she will only get stronger. Our dog still goes from her bone or toys to our hands and delicate has been the best thing we have succeeded in training her.
