Tips for glossy, healthy coat and skin.
Hi all
Just wondered if anybody had any tips to keep your dog's coat glossy and skin healthy. I noticed that Fritz's coat was looking a bit dull and he was getting doggy-dandruff. We recently changed his diet to Wainwright's and I've already noticed a huge improvement (after only 1 week!), and was wondering if there was anything else we could do to get that healthy gloss? We bathe him maybe once every few months or whenever he gets muddy, and brush him regularly (he loves being groomed and it relaxes him so we do it quite often).
I've read that you can feed your food omega-rich fish such as tinned salmon and tuna. Would it be best to buy the fish in spring water or in oil? I've also seen people recommend adding a teaspoon of olive or coconut oil to a dog's food. Has anyone tried this before?
As for bathing, at the moment we use Johnson's Aloe Vera dog shampoo, but I'm unsure if this is a good brand or not as I'm clueless about doggy shampoos haha.
Any help?

I also wanted to ask what vegetables are safe to feed your dog. I know tomatoes, avocados, and mushrooms are a no-no. We often give him carrots and broccoli stalks to munch on while we are cooking. Are those safe?

Feeding a raw egg occasionally is also great for a shiny healthy coat.

Re: Tips for glossy, healthy coat and skin.
Hello! The food change will help - Wainwrights has had great reviews from other forum users. Johnsons isn't a great brand for anything really doggy wise - I currently use Tropiclean (£10 for a big bottle) and that smells lovely and has been good for Bug's sensitive skin, though i'm thinking of switching to pethead oatmeal shampoo. You really just want to go for something as natural as possible without any heavy perfumes.
I also give raw eggs, I make Biscuit's treats from oily fish and she has coconut oil added to her feeds a few times per week. I only bath Biscuit if she has rolled in something funny - maybe 3/4 times per year. Over bathing will dry the skin out and make the coat dull. In between bathing, I use a zoom groom to remove hair and stimulate the skin. We're always getting complimented by our vet for Bug's coat

As above all good tips, I use viacutan plus on Vin originally from vets but now get from amazon, has a lot of different oils in there. Also use Apple cider vinegar

I think most balanced diets free from nastiness such as derivatives and bulking will make for a nice coat. Bo is on Nature's Menu and Lily's Kitchen and that's pretty much it as he has a sensitive stomach. His coat is great, though, he's like a seal and when you stroke him you can hardly feel anything.

I'll definitely try raw eggs! I sometimes give him one cooked if we're making dippy eggs, and he loves that
Thanks for the shampoo advice, Rachel33. I will be swapping from the Johnson's now, I know Pets at Home do the Pethead stuff so I'll definitely look into that.

How do you use the apple cider vinegar? I give it to my hens once a month - its not the human grade one - would that be ok? I'm also able to chuck him the odd raw egg too cos of the chickens - shell n all

1 teaspoon a couple of times a week added to water in a spray bottle for their coat you can also add apple cider vinegar to food.

Re: Tips for glossy, healthy coat and skin.
Thanks for all the tips everyone!
Gave Fritz a raw egg in his bowl today and he scoffed it down. How often should I feed him eggs? I'm assuming not daily as their fat content is quite high...?

Re: Tips for glossy, healthy coat and skin.
High protein quality food ,tinned sardines and tuna and as much Fresh raw fish you can give them and not over washing the coat and if you do only with quality shampoo but mostly warm water will do.
