Is your Staffie aloof?
Hello everyone,
I was just wondering if any of your Staffies don't have the typical Staffie trait of being very people orientated.
Moose is the most loving and affectionate of dogs with me and I love her to bits. She almost always wants to be in the same room as me, and I wouldn't change that for anything. But, with other people, she is generally pretty aloof and disinterested which, as all of you will know, is very uncommon for Staffies. She will greet my mum and sister but is not exactly loving with them or particularly 'interested' in them for lack of a better word. With my dad she is a bit better. When meeting people for the first time she is pretty much always aloof.
A few months ago we visited the kennels we got her from and there was only one person who she really seemed happy to see. It seems as if she just forms strong bonds with certain people. Perhaps she was always ignored at her old home and was only given attention from one person.
I don't have any concern here or anything. Just a questions of curiosity...

Re: Is your Staffie aloof?
Aloof, no I wouldnt say so. He follows me round all the time....like a dog. If I go to the kitchen he comes too. If I sit on the sofa, he climbs up too. When I go to bed, well he would be there too - if he was allowed. He's friendly to people that I'm friendly with and after he's met them once or twice (if they've made a fuss of him) he rushes toward them in the street with his tail wagging. He's better with women than with men though we had a (male) visitor from London recently and the dog spent most of the evening curled up next to this man with his head in his lap - so it's not a hard and fast rule. When meeting people for the very first time he may seem to be aloof but he's probably evaluating them (very sensible) and working out whether they are going to be nice to him.

Even people I'm friendly with and who we have met a number of times she doesn't bother with haha, even if they make a fuss of her! She will accept a stroke for a moment but then just walks past and ignores them...
I just think it's pretty unusual for a Staffie! I'm pretty sure she has some other breed in her make up. Possibly some of this behaviour comes from that other breed, whatever it may be. Still, she is definitely mostly Staffie!

aloof ?
only to humans she's tried introducing herself to .. and they've ignored her
when she see's them again .. she ignores them ..
but if human responds in kind .. wanting to say hello to her ..
then when she sees them .. she goes into ..
"excited to see you again" mode .. :-)

My Flo isn't aloof to humans but is very much so to other dogs. She will even parade her fancy stick in front of them and just wander on past

I'm sure Toot's wishes she could split herself into many pieces.
She hurls herself at everyone she meets, joyfully greeting all humans and dogs alike.

Not here either, Biscuit is fear aggressive towards men, but adores people really so becomes very conflicted when she wants to say hello but the fear takes over! But if any ladies say hello to me on a walk she will try to wiggle her little butt over to them!

Re: Is your Staffie aloof?
Pretty interesting replies from everyone. Our pooches all have their own likes, dislikes and characters and that's why we love them!
Reading back on what I put, I think I put Moose in the wrong light haha! It's not like she's a miserable bitch or anything lol. She has a sweet disposition, but is pretty indifferent to the vast majority of people. It's a little difficult to explain...

Re: Is your Staffie aloof?
Mia is aloof. She isn't bothered about strangers who try to fuss her but with all family members she has a very strong bond. I have had Mia since weeks old and when she started going out, got lots of attention, was always getting stopped for people to have a fuss. I don't know if she just got indifferent to it or she just likes to stick with the family. She has quite a protective streak in her
