Need advice from people with cats Empty Need advice from people with cats

Post by Jackson14 Tue Sep 23 2014, 19:47

Hi,

I have 4 cats which are indoor cats and we just got a staffy pup and he is about 10-11 weeks old now.

I just wanted to get some advice from people with cats & staffys together. I'm totally worried sick that he will grow up and one day & possibly kill one of my cats.

We have had him a week and we kept them in separate rooms for 3-4 days so they could smell each other then tried some introductions. 2 of the cats hide and the other 2 are interested but wary of his exitable behavior. He got a wack from one cat for this.

He seems like he wants to play with the cats and hasn't tried to chase them yet. Is this a good sign?

Cats will normally teach the pup to keep away (if that's what they want). Some will be friendly, some not. The cat rules. Have had both together with no problems except for a tiny kitten getting chomped when she approached a GSD's food bowl that he was eating from (she recovered and learnt her lesson). If your pup grows up with them he should never hurt them. Murphy at 20 kg was completely ruled by a less than 1 kg. Abyssinian who when she wanted to would get in his bed and move him over to make her own space. Just love to see the cat/dog interactions.

My cat was 14 when we got Bailey (who was 6 months old when we got him)
We put a stair gate at top of stairs so Phobie could go up stairs when she needed time away from excitable dog.
I taught Bailay -first with a ball, that when I said "the balls mums, leave it" so he could get ball only if I said he could have it.
The same thing was applied to Phobie- "Phobie is Mums- leave it"
He soon got the hang of it after much preservation.
However after 2 years having them both, it is only now that Phobie will let Bailey any where near her. He has been swiped on the nose by her if he gets to close and I think this is good for him. He has never showed any signs of aggression to wards her, and I think he sees her as part of his family, Phobie is definitely the boss of Bailey lol.

He'll be OK with the cats honest. After a while he won't bother them because he'll look on them as one of his own.

I have never had a cat but certainly out in the street Ledger shows little interest in cats that sit and watch him pass (however we have a couple nearby that properly stalk their territory and will approach and swipe a paw at any dog)

Your pup being cat size at the moment I would think should settle fine with your cats they will be ruling the roost and less likely to run from him so won't be creating that chase/prey behaviour

Yeah i have 2 indoor cats and brought in a pup. Never been a problem the cats will boss the pup around. Just keep an eye on them at first, both cats and dogs, cats have rather sharp claws and go for eyes.

We have a cat and Lula knows better than to annoy him. Lula doesn`t seem to like cats but she won`t mess with ginger cats Laughing

Yeah we had two cats when we had our previous staffy Bree - she was just a boisterous 12 week old pup. They disappeared upstairs for most of the time & she'd chase them around. Then we had to put a stair gate on the bottom of the stairs to give the cats a bit of an escape. In the end tho the cats ruled the roost and if there were any strange cats in the garden Bree used to charge down the path at them and leap over our cats if they were in the way. Never any aggression at all.

My cat always goes for my pup, she got her in the eye once and the pup needed eye drops, I try to keep my eye on them as much as possible, the dog just wants to play but the cat doesn't, which is when she will hiss or try to hit he
