Depressed blue staffy
Hi, I wouldn't mind some advice please. I have a brindle staff, my mum has a blue staff. My mum went on holiday yesterday for 11 nights, and asked if we could take her dog in. We have, he is a blue staff. Absolutely lovely nature and both our dogs getting in really well. However, he arrived last night, I gave him dinner, which he refused to eat. This morning, he didn't eat breakfast. I am assuming he is depressed as my mum on holiday. I expected him to eat tonight, but again, he hasn't. I took both of them for a walk earlier, and he went for a number two, and it is pure liquid. I am thinking he will settle down in the next couple of days, and that he is just a bit down, which would explain the dodgy tummy. But at the same time I am a little concerned about him. What do people think? Depressed and disturbance of routine? Or something else? His ears are slightly cold. But far from drastically. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Re: Depressed blue staffy
Could be either sick or depressed. I'd feed something to settle his stomach and wait and see if he got any worse before going to a vet. Is he still drinking normally?

Re: Depressed blue staffy
Maybe a change in routine. If he's drinking ok you might want to try something like Chicken or Tuna and Rice to tempt him to eat.
If of course he doesn't start eating in the next day or so then perhaps a visit to the vets.
When you get a min, pop along here and say Hi:-

Re: Depressed blue staffy
I think perhaps it's stress from missing your mum, boiled white rice and cooked chicken for a few days should help as always if he doesn't improve pop him the vet xx

Def missing his mum, like steve said mind games and mental stimulation. it will get better but as silly as it feels acting like a complete daft git around him and play bowing, treats and making your place a happy place to be will always help. if you play it right now he will always see your place as a safe and happy place to be in the future as well.

Re: Depressed blue staffy
Thank you. Yes, I am thinking depressed, few days and he will be fine. Plus the usual alpha male and finding their place within the home. I am just panicking as my staff would never stop eating for love nor money! Then with the number two issue, made me more concerned this evening. Will continue to offer him food, if he doesn't eat breakfast, will pop,to shops and get tuna or chicken. He is drinking fine, and enjoying a fuss. I do think his just missing my mum and is feeling low. Thank you for the reassurance, with any luck he will have settled in next few days. Any idea how long it will take!? I was a little concerned about his ears too, but they are not majorly cold, just cool to touch, and that may just be him. Thank you for your advice and putting my mind to rest.

Re: Depressed blue staffy
Dont worry about the ears, they regulate temp through the mouth and feet/legs. gums are the first signs of concern. check to make sure they arnt pale. you need to lift the upper lip and check to see if the gum between the canines are pink. if so its all good. if not dont worry just repeat in a day or so time. TBH it sounds like he is just missing his best friend. forget the alpha model theory its provd wrong and even the guy that suggested it has tried to get his early books removed from circulation. it was based on captive wolves and not dogs or free wild wolves,

Re: Depressed blue staffy
Success? Came downstairs, greeted by them both. Both looked at me, ok where's my breakfast? He ate it all! Just keep an eye on the number two's now. But yes, think it was a bit of depression. Just started getting worried last night. Thank you for all your reassurances, really helped x

Re: Depressed blue staffy
Pleased to hear he has settled in a bit now, are you feeding the same food at the same time of the day as your mother was ? A change in routine may have upset his tummy.
