First close shave
Just got back from a lovely walk over the fields except for one incident. I was one side of a huge football sized field with long grass in the middle and a woman with a pushchair, two little children & a huge black lab type were the other. Milo & me were happily playing footie minding our own, when I heard the woman shouting - sure enough there was this black lab trotting over towards us. I thought - no worries, black lab soft as - until I saw it's tail standing erect and hackles up. Well it approached growling and showing its teeth and lunged at Milo who was on his training lead. I let go of the lead so Milo could run away from him otherwise I'm certain he would got in a fight. When the woman eventually caught him she apologised and said 'he isn't even my bleeding dog!'........after that she kept him on a lead. It was scary - but Milo wasn't a bit bothered by it thankfully.
The thing is if you're not sure of a strange dog why run the risk of it running off after another dog? She left the poor kiddies and the pushchair on the other side of the field to come to fetch the dog back.

Re: First close shave
Just a tad irresponsible if you ask me. Surely if you do not know how a dog is going to react to others you wouldn't let it off the lead ??????

Re: First close shave
Thankyou everyone - it was scary and it made me sort of expect something to happen again today but nothing did. A little girl wanted to say hello to Milo and asked me first which was great. Milo was great with her so that was a positive experience - and just shows that each day you're going to meet different challenges, some days good some not. That's the 'joy' of owning a dog (a friendly dog of course)

That dog was probably owned by an idiot that told her to let it off, knows it attacks others but doesn't care.

Re: First close shave
Why would someone let another persons dog off the lead. She had no idea how it would react or weather the dog was good with recall (Obviously not in this case). I'm sorry but if I was walking someone elses pooch, I wouldn't let it off lead in case something happened. Some people don't have the sense they were born with

Re: First close shave
I want to let Milo off his lead and I know my husband does (and then moans cos he won't go back to him duh) but I'm so scared now that he'll run into an aggressive dog and get bitten or worse. I'm trying so hard on the recall but still a long way to go I'm afraid so its the training leash for a while yet

Really ? That sounds like it could mean trouble to me. Definitely if you know the other dog its okay but a strange dog? I wouldn't do it.

Re: First close shave
Yeah, cause hes a puppy she said that he needs to learn to be told off by another dog and its not acceptable to be all up in their faces, It has worked, but thats in an area I know really well and the same people walk there every day.

Re: First close shave
Thats a thin line, puppies do need to be put in there places but by dogs they know. risking it with strange dogs is just asking for trouble.
a cocksure pup with no idea of dog etiquette aproaching an already DA dog on a lead will only end in tears.
its akin to touching a radiator to feel the experiance of heat over plunging a fist into moulton lead.

Re: First close shave
Im just going on what my trainer said, she said there was no use just being told off by dogs he sees every day as he will get used to it, but then I only let him off in one field and as I said its the same field I walk in every day, I have a training lead for when we go elsewhere!!

Re: First close shave
Brrrrr I just don't like the sound of that - sorry - yes to the training leash at least you can get him away if the other dog has a real go but not without. I'm also thinking about the other dog owner & how they might be feeling about a strange dog running up to their dog who may have probs with other dogs or am I being too much of a worrier?
