Post by Chris1810 Thu Jul 10 2014, 08:47

Hi just wondering if you can help me..I have a 10 month old bitch who was on wainwrights puppy trays..But when I took her to the vets for a check up the vet said that there is to much protein in the wainwrights food and to change over to butchers puppy which he said was the best due to none fillers or cereal based food in it..can somebody clear this up for me please as the vets sold science plan? Thanks

Hoe much protein has the Wainwrights food? It's a good food. From what I know puppies food should contains no more then 28% of protein. I've never fed Debo Butchers so can say any thing about it.

It has 30% protein in the wainwrights...the vet said it was too much for her and to switch to butchers food and tripe..I don't know much about butchers food so just wondering how it was?

Was there a big display with butchers food in the waiting room ?

Vets know bugger all about dog food and will only tell you to get what they are sponsored by.

I know bugger all about puppy food cause I have always had rescues but I am sure that there are some very knowledgeable folks her that will help you.

As said before butchers has a terrible reputation as dog food.

Change the vet as he must be bribed by butchers or very high. Wainwrights is much better than butchers that is mainly meat and animal derivatives = corpses!!.
And the actual meat percentage In the trays is 11% and not 30%.
I can't believe a vet could have said it its shocking.
You can get better food than wainwrights but not butchers just read the ingredients list or ask here.

Vets apparently only get 1 day of dog nutrition and it is sponsored, I kid you not, by a dog food company. Unsurprisingly there brand of dog food is best. Often the vets practice will be sponsored by a dog food company and they will get a cut from selling you whatever they happen to be sponsored by.

Very few vets know anything about dog foods because they aren't trained and would have to do their own research to find out.

do some research on the net. it's no good asking vets because,as has been said, a lot of vets get kick-backs to push various products. tessa was a rescue and had been fed jwb since she had been with the rspca so i bought a small bag ftom them to shut them up and back at home she wouldn't touch it.
also don't expect advise that you get from here to solve your problem because everyone has a different opinion and that is all they are....opinions.

Wainwrights puppy food trays have roughly 11% protein and Butchers around 9%, so technically he is right. What you have to consider is;

1. Is your pup eating his current wet food (Wainwrights)?
2. Is his poop firm and not too sloppy?
3. Is he putting on weight?
4. Are you having any other problems with your pup with regard to his diet?

If you can answer yes, no, yes and no I would see no reason to change his food apart from introducing kibbles with it if you are not already. Whilst I cannot dispute about what/who trains vets in nutrition, I do know that our vet recommended Natures Science and, surprisingly enough, had a large display of it in the reception area! I originally gave Meg Arden Grange until she went off it and I gradually changed her to Wainwrights which she has had ever since. I am led to believe that this brand is actually James Wellbeloved for Pets at Home. Butcher's brand is pretty poor IMO and I wouldn't give it to Meg to eat. Each to their own I suppose.

Why bother posting something negative? The OP was asking for other peoples opinions in the first place. Getting a good cross section can help bring the OP to an informed decision with regard to other peoples actual experiences and just telling people to research it on the internet is also not an answer. What if the OP is not that computer savvy? There's plenty of misleading information on the 'net too you know.

I've just googled butchers food, now I know which one it is, as said before it's rubbish. As said by Daz, if your puppy is healthy, there is no healthy issues with him I would stay with wainwrights. If you really want to change the food, please do some research before you do.

i simply pointed out that a dog food that someone has fed their dogs for years with no problems will be cosidered crap by someone else. how can you make an informed decision with everyone singing from a different sheet.

Chris, just stick with wainwrights.
Dazaldo, what Daz meant by it, is there are people on the forum who knows which food brand is a good quality and which is crap. We all know that what works for one dog doesn't have to work for another, but recognize quality when we see one. And Chris was simply asking if butcher was good quality food.

Sorry, but that is not what you said in your first post. Your first post came across as very negative.

I put Milo onto canned Butchers Tripe mix cos he went absolutely nuts over it when we stayed at my daughter's. They feed their cockerpoo on it and she's really fit and healthy. Milos poops were not nice before he started having it, now he has (can I say) perfect poos and he cleans his bowl every morning and night. The only bit he has left is stuck on his nose at the end. I'm really happy with it. His coat is shiny, he has loads of energy so we're happy.

I was a bit - oooo - thats prob not good food but I found it good for mine. All I can suggest is give it a go for a week and see how you get on with it.

It's probably best to feed all wet (or all dry) anyway, rather than mix the two. Just remember to brush her teeth once in a while.
