BANG, BANG! Debo's scared.
HI again.
We have a nice place , where Debo can run of the lead, roll in the mud, all the fun. On Friday, just when we got to the place and I was about let Debo of the lead, I've heard shoot in the distance. Debo froze, ears and tail down. I tried to encouraged him, start running, he followed and there was another bang. He turn around and started walking other way. I called him back, put him on the lead and took him back on the track.
He looked really scared so we walked back home.
So my question is should I, well no force him but keep walking and show him it's ok, I'm not affraid, he's gonna be fine or turn around and not make him be in the place where something has scared him?

Do you know what caused the noise, could it have been from a rifle or shotgun?

i think you have to try to work him through it but i know how hard it is when you know they are nervous or scared of something. just a little at a time keep talking to him and reasuring him and a reward for being brave he will soon come round.
my dad was always amazed at how sensitive such a big strong breed they are.

Re: BANG, BANG! Debo's scared.
Kathy, it was from some kind of gun, it was in the countryside. It was on Friday, took him again on Sunday, as soon, as he noticed were we heading, that was it. Started pulling the other way, I kept him on the lead and just kept walking, run a bit, lots of rewards. Didn't push him too far. But as soon I let him of the lead he refused to go, just sat there. So back on the lead and we headed home. He was so affraid he didn't want any of his treats.

Can you walk to that area from another direction? Even if you get dropped off some distance away and approach from the wrong direction. That may help with the worry of that area, but as far as the fear of loud noises I can't help. We struggled with Floyds' fear of noise all his life. From thunder to Lynn shouting at me he was off!

Thanks Pete. Yep, I've tried that, he's one clever dog. When he was younger he was fine with all the bangs, shoots etc, something has changed that, have no idea what.

It's funny how he changed all of a sudden. The advice above is good, slowly go a little bit further if you can. Hopefully he'll realise that you're there for him.

Frosty is the same. I find being patient and encouraging but not giving in to his fear helps him through it. Even taking some treats along can be helpful. It can be really frustrating at times, but I have found patience and encouragement to be best at getting him through. Walk along the same path but be prepared to do a lot of standing and encouraging. Hopefully there won't be any additional shooting while you are there. Otherwise, you may have to do another route for a while. It doesn't do a ton of good to just drag them along if they are terrorized. It will just make it worse.

Re: BANG, BANG! Debo's scared.
Likely there was no more shooting. The treats would help if he wasn't so scared, he didn't want any
When on the lead he was walking by my side, no pulling. As soon as we turn around to go back home he pulled like a train to get as fast as he can back home. Today decided to give him a break, will try tomorrow again. Likely, he won't run away he will just sit there.
