(we had this one read at our wedding)
How Falling in Love is like Owning a Dog
by Taylor Mali
First of all, it’s a big responsibility,
especially in a city like New York.
So think long and hard before deciding on love.
On the other hand, love gives you a sense of security:
when you’re walking down the street late at night
and you have a leash on love
ain’t no one going to mess with you.
Because crooks and muggers think love is unpredictable.
Who knows what love could do in its own defense?
On cold winter nights, love is warm.
It lies between you and lives and breathes
and makes funny noises.
Love wakes you up all hours of the night with its needs.
It needs to be fed so it will grow and stay healthy.
Love doesn’t like being left alone for long.
But come home and love is always happy to see you.
It may break a few things accidentally in its passion for life,
but you can never be mad at love for long.
Is love good all the time? No! No!
Love can be bad. Bad, love, bad! Very bad love.
Love makes messes.
Love leaves you little surprises here and there.
Love needs lots of cleaning up after.
Somethimes you just want to get love fixed.
Sometimes you want to roll up a piece of newspaper
and swat love on the nose,
not so much to cause pain,
just to let love know Don’t you ever do that again!
Sometimes love just wants to go out for a nice long walk.
Because love loves exercise. It will run you around the block
and leave you panting, breathless. Pull you in different directions
at once, or wind itself around and around you
until you’re all wound up and you cannot move.
But love makes you meet people wherever you go.
People who have nothing in common but love
stop and talk to each other on the street.
Throw things away and love will bring them back,
again, and again, and again.
But most of all, love needs love, lots of it.
And in return, love loves you and never stops.

Re: Share Your Dog Poems
A Staffy’s Lament
Today is just another day - to me they're all the same
I have the worst of genes you see, I bear the "Staffy" shame.
The shame is in our numbers, there's thousands with no home.
Thousands just like me you'll find, in kennels all alone.
My mum was "just a Staffy", my father - well who knows?
Mum, too, became unwanted, as the last puppy goes.
And then begins the process, of money-making deals
A life of "moving on" unfolds, who cares how the Staffy feels?
If you have the cash to hand, the Staffy pup is yours
But Staff pups get much bigger, and have such powerful jaws.
You brought me for your image, thought I'd make you look more tough
I have a boisterous nature, and without training play quiet rough.
If you had thought to train me, with kindness and with praise
You would have had a faithful friend to share your darkest days.
I would lay down my life for you, but you simply cannot see
You make sure you get your money back on what you paid for me.
And on it goes, until one day, I'm no longer worth a penny
No retail for an adult staff - as there are far too many.
So what happens to a Staffy now? Do you really want to know?
Do you care what will become of us, when we leave our final home?
Have you ever thought to wonder, "Where is that Staffy now?"
The "Staffy" has another name; he's become a "stray" somehow.
Me, I was put into a car and driven far away
The door held open, I jumped out, I thought to run and play.
It was with joy and happy heart I turned to look for you
But you drove away with all my trust and a piece of my heart too.
I wondered round for many days before I was brought here.
Now I wait with heavy heart, trepidation and with fear.
Seven days is all I have you see, seven days for you to claim
The little dog that you threw out, for which you have no shame.
This is my last goodbye now my seven days are up
If only more thought had gone into the future of that pup
As the needle empties to my veins I lay down with one last sigh
Sorry that I was born a Staffy, because it means that I must die.

Re: Share Your Dog Poems
NOBODY'S DOG
Today is the death day of nobody's dog
Nothing will mark it but a note in the log
I'm faceless and nameless and no tears will fall
For I know in your world I have no worth at all
To you, my sweet someone, I'm a friend and a dear
We ran the wind daily and you held me so near
But the gate was left open - I chanced a walk on my own
I'd have cowered in fear if only I'd known
I know how you cried on the night that I strayed
I know how you searched, I know how you prayed
But I went to a pound far far from our home
Where I crouched in despair in my kennel alone
I know that you phoned for I heard your dear voice
And I hoped you would hear me so I barked myself hoarse
Although I'm a Lab cross with stockings all white
On their form I'm a Staff cross - the description's not right
So they said I'm not here and I sank to my bed
My kennel cough's worse and I can't raise my head
The rescue came yesterday but they hadn't a place
For an un-neutered cross breed with his mucus-streaked face
If only you'd come to search for me here
You would have known me at once, you would have sensed I was near
You would have sorted my ills, you would have carried me home
And I promise our God no more would I roam
Now my eyes plead for mercy for my seven days are done
And I am waiting with dread for the final vet run
No arms will caress me as they inject me to death
No words will comfort me as I take my last breath
When the body man comes, it is fitting I'm found
In a bin bag in the freezer in the depths of the pound
Thrown away like the rubbish - no respect and no shame
Denied even the time to find you again
My loyalty and devotion they did cruelly betray
Without microchip or nametag, I am just a dispensable stray
Once waggy-tailed, once proud, beloved and free
Oh Dad look with pain at what mankind's done to me!
Today is the death day of nobody's dog

Re: Share Your Dog Poems
Don't Judge Me.
How can you look at my face and say
he's a dangerous dog, you must keep him away?
Why do you run when you see me coming,
I'm only playing I'm only running?
Why do you think my breed is so wrong,
because I have muscle,
because I am strong ?
It's down to the people
who want you to be,
afraid of the Staffie,
Oh why can't you see.
The media people have planted the seed,
to make you wrongly judge
my wonderful breed.
If you got to know me,
I'm sure that you'd find,
that just like most Staffie's
I'm gentle and kind.
I won't hurt your children,
I just want to play,
I am the nanny dog
so people say.
So how can you look at my face and say,
He's a dangerous dog
you must keep him away ?

Re: Share Your Dog Poems
I have a dog and Nita is her name,
She runs real fast like an inertial reference frame (google it),
She wees poos and pees, and also pukes,
And her farts are like, Russias ballistic nukes,
She sleeps on the sofa, while I'm on the floor,
Rakes through the bin and leaves a right eye sore,
But one thing I will say, and this is that,
I much prefer her to a ruddy manky cat,
The moral of this poem is just this,
Owning a staffy is real damn bliss,
They follow you about like a little shadow,
Especially to the loo when its time to go,
FFS get out the bathroom, we usually shout,
Something, something, something, brussel sprout,
But one thing we know, we're all crazy,
For the love and affection of our fur babies.
PS, I can't rhyme for diddly plus I have imbibed a bottle of wine. So, forgive the terrible poem

I have a dawg, and Vinnie is his name, he often looks at Mummy and thinks "she is insane!"
My Vinnie could be right, as I often drink a lot,
But one thing is for sure I have really lost the plot!

Re: Share Your Dog Poems
Chase-Face!
My name is Chase the staffy,
I'm brindle and I'm white,
I like to play a bit too rough,
But mum is putting that right!
Nobody knows my background,
I'm a bit of a mystery,
Dad says I'm a bull-dozer,
But I can change you see!
I love my little family,
They're doing right for me,
The children think I'm a cutie,
And just want to fuss me!
With training and with love,
I'll show them I can be,
The best little friend,
That I can truly be!
