Deer attack Empty Deer attack

Post by KMDT Mon May 26 2014, 23:40

We went to Richmond park yesterday. It was lovely till the end. We saw a large doe near by so we put Zeus on a lead. Carried on walking down the hill and saw the other couple with a white Labrador, who was just lying on the grass, minding her own business. Next moment the deer charged the dog. The lab barely had time to notice the deer before it was right on top of her and stomping on her. She yelped and ran away, the owner realised what was happening and charged at the deer who retreated. The woman went to check their dog. He went to see his dog then carried her for 100m or so.

By the time we catch up with them the man had decided to get their car rather than carrying his dog, we stayed with them until the man returned. She had quite a deep cut under her front left leg, nothing broken, and shaking like a leaf. They presumably went to the nearest vet.

What a terrible experience it must have been for them. And almost unbelievable to witness. We need to be careful when deer in mating season.

For the record we and Zeus are fine.

Not just deer, any animal that has young. A year ago this month, a friend of mine, a professor at Edinburgh University, was trampled to death by a herd of cows with calves. He was walking through their field with his brother and two dogs. It was the presence of the dogs that had upset the cows. Terribly sad, but also understandable that an animal will want to protect its young.

sorry to hear about your friend that is truely tragic. what you say is true as well. people underestimate the desire of a prey animal to protect its young from predators. they also forget that despite the magestic images of a wolf pack on the hunt, or a pride of lions prowling they all share one common trait, they seek out the weak and vulnerable. they no better than to go steaming into a herd thats for sure and even domestic cows will get spooked at the slightest of things.

Wow that must have been a frightening sight. When I've been over to Richmond, I always stay well clear of the dear. They just seem way too unpredictable for my liking.

Hope the Lab is ok.

Glad you were all OK.

What people have got to remember about the above is, it's the Deer's environment as much as anyone else's.
