Harry in Vet Hospital with Eye Problem
Harry is in the Veterinary Hospital to be sedated and have his eye examined . He was fine last night,
but during the night he got out of bed and in a half awake state I thought he was biting his paw but he
was actually rubbing his eye. This morning when I got up I saw his eye was closed and swollen and I had
to bathe it open.
Took him to the Vets but he wouldn't let them look at it! (He hates Vets). Think its probably an infection but as the Vet
can't be sure he doesn't have something in his eye or that its anything more, he has to be examined
more thoroughly.
Poor little boy looks so sorry for himself and I'm at home feeling lost without him. Time will go very slowly until
6pm.

Re: Harry in Vet Hospital with Eye Problem
It is horrible having something in your eye.
Thank goodness it is the 21st century and we have doctors and vets that can actually tackle these situations.
Let us know what the doctors say.

Re: Harry in Vet Hospital with Eye Problem
Well we just got home at 8pm, its been a long day! Harry has an ulcer on his eye, its superficial so nothing
more serious. He's on antibiotics drops three times a day and metacam for the pain. They said he was
a good boy, which surprised me as he can be a handful when stressed. He didn't grumble at all and only
needed the lightest sedation. They found the ulcer down the bottom of the eye by pulling down the lower
eyelid.
Unfortunately he has to go through it all again on Monday to see that it is healing up
The worst part though is that he has a huge collar on to stop him from getting at his eye to rub it. On the
one hand it looks comical but the poor boy looks so miserable about it, and I feel a really wicked Mother
He won't walk far, he's standing like a statue. Can't get near enough to a bush in the garden to sniff, so won't wee.
For the first time in his life he is refusing food, even hand fed chicken breast and won't have a drink. Lord
knows how he is going to get in bed with me tonight
Must admit the collar seems really big, he can't lower his head even slightly without it hitting the ground. I
had thought of trimming it a bit.
Thanks everyone for your good wishes, I must admit I have been really lost today without him and haven't
been able to eat or relax. So glad he's home.

Re: Harry in Vet Hospital with Eye Problem
It's only for a few days. It will help him mend more quickly. But, yes, I completely and utterly understand the temptation to take it off etc because they hate them so much.
The statues business is what happens here too.
How do you get an ulcer in the eye? Does it start off as a speck of dust?

Re: Harry in Vet Hospital with Eye Problem
I asked the Vet about it, and she said that it probably started off by a
scratch from nosing in the hedge when out walking, or even from a blade
of grass when Harry bent down to sniff.
As you know the feeling something is in your eye is very irritating and feels huge,
so the dog rubs it and an ulcer is the result.
Must admit I never once saw Harry rub his eye until this morning when
it was obvious. He had been shaking his head occasionally though and I
checked his ears which were fine.

Re: Harry in Vet Hospital with Eye Problem
Good news that you've gotten to the bottom of it. Some of the cones o shame are huge, you can trim them if your happy that he won't try and paw his eye.
Flo is an expert at getting them off and I just won't even bother anymore
